It's a must see performance from Gary Oldman. Sadly, this movie got lost in the "Gangster" shuffle when it was released in 1990. Audiences might have gotten Gangster fatigue being that 1990 was the same year that Goodfellas, Godfather 3 and Miller's Crossing were released. I'd say that State Of Grace is worth the blind buy even at TT inflated prices, especially if you're a Gary Oldman fan.

Great news! Yes, State of Grace is an amazing film - I've seen it a couple of times over the years via DVD rentals, but it's definitely been a while. Excellent crime drama set in NYC, and had a completely different feel/vibe from the mobster movies we're used to... I believe the DVD is OOP....

I saw it at the cinema on first release and have the Australian Blu-ray. It's always been a favourite and I've lost count on how many viewings I've given it. Ed Harris and Gary Oldman steal the film and their performances are among their best ever. Harris is volcanic at times, playing the elder brother of Oldman. Gary's the full nutbar here. There's a moment where his character is in a fit of rage and Oldman was so immersed in the scene that he actually clobbered an extra with one punch. And it actually made media reports at the time! Thankfully it was left in the film.

I blind bought the Australian version about a year ago and I was blown away. Harris, Penn, and of course Oldman give great performances. It's a mob movie about the lower levels of the mob. Very gritty. That scene with Penn on the subway was amazing.
