The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen's Sandringham Estate. There's eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Top 10 of the year personally, what a beautiful film. Though I’d love to see the Royal Family’s faces while watching it. I haven’t looked but I bet there’s an outraged think piece somewhere about how historically inaccurate and fictionalised using creative license it is (who cares, it’s a fable?), and how it’s a hit piece on the Royal Family or something like that. UK funding bodies like the BBC and BFI didn’t want to touch the film because I suppose it’s controversial subject matter.

I think Jackie was a little stronger but that doesn’t diminish this film.

I’m not a monarchist at all but I still love films like this and The Favourite which examine the human lives, loves and messiness behind the figureheads.

Greenwood’s jazz esque score is wonderful as is the photographic quality of Mahon’s cinematography.

It definitely reminds me of why I would never want to be a princess.

I kind of want to see this even though it sounds like something between a dumpster fire and a film like Ammonite, meaning a film that takes abundant license with portrayals of real-life figures. I'm hoping it's closer to Ammonite, which at least was nicely acted and restrained, but with the royals involved I sense it could be prone to much shouting and lobbing of missiles and the like.

The Decal Releasing disc sounds problematic, so I will wait for information on this one.

I saw this in cinema and I liked it a lot. I don't think it's comparable to the kinds of historical drama that Ammonite was. However, it is very likely that it takes a fair amount of artistic license, but I don't care at all about the royals to care how fairly they're depicted. It's not trying to be based that closely on real events. I found it more of a psychological horror film that tries to capture a sense of what Diana's emotional space might have been during the three days depicted. Also, Kristen Stewart and Timothy Spall in particular are fantastic in it. I don't think it's anywhere approaching a dumpster fire, although how you feel about pearls might make you feel differently.

It's one of my favorites from 2021 personally. Have you seen Jackie from the same director? (I do see that you own it on BD). There's a certain starkness, and lack of warmth that runs through both, but they're both beautifully shot, and well-acted films, with Stewart arguably giving her best performance to date. I think both of those films pair nicely together, though Jackie being the stronger of the two.

I have not watched my copy of Jackie yet, no. I will give Spencer a look, though.

A 1080p Blu-Ray looks almost identical to a digital 4K stream. The Blu-Ray you own too. So Blu-Ray always over digital.

I’ve yet to see SPENCER due to the fact the US BLU is trash.

It also got a German releasse, one has to be watchable? Right?

So far, the best release for extras is Eagle’s Italian release, which includes “Over 40 minutes of extra content with interviews with the cast and director”. Unsure on compression.

I have the NEON 5 year boxset disc and literally can't play the movie?? The main menu is just the title with a video montage. No buttons to select and I cant even force play a title. Am I missing something here?
