Criterion Miller's Crossing (1990)

Quote:
A Roaring Twenties gangster saga that only the Coen brothers could concoct, Miller's Crossing marries the hard-boiled sensibility of classic noir fiction with the filmmakers' trademark savory dialogue, colorful characters, and finely calibrated set pieces. Gabriel Byrne brings a wry gravitas to the role of Tom Reagan, the quick-thinking right-hand man to a powerful crime boss (Albert Finney), whose unflappable cool is tested when he begins offering his services to a rival outfit—setting off a cascade of betrayals, reprisals, and increasingly berserk violence. The Hopperesque visuals of cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, majestically elegiac score by Carter Burwell, and vivid supporting performances from John Turturro and Marcia Gay Harden come together in an intricately constructed slice of pulp perfection that crackles with sardonic wit while plumbing existential questions about free will and our own terrifying capacity for evil.

Missed opportunity for a 4K UHD.

Probably have to blame Disney for that one.

Just from the looks of the screenshots on their website and the transfer description, it seems it will be the same master as the Fox Blu. The exclusion of the 4.0 track is a disappointment (the 5.1 has a missing music cue).

Just noticed it's from a 2K digital restoration, so a 4K release was out of the picture anyway.

Kinda wondering why they’re releasing this, then, if it’s the same transfer as the previous release and there’s no 4k or even DVD from Criterion…

Not to mention that Fox doesn't really allow third-party labels to perform restorations for their titles. Also, Barry Sonnenfield has outright stated that he doesn't like HDR, so maybe it's a blessing that this didn't get a 4K release...

I wouldn’t assume offhand it’s the same transfer, and though Criterion’s encoding has its faults I would think just because of improvements in compression any new disc being done today should look demonstrably improved over a disc from ten years ago.

Oh, for sure. I’ll withhold judgment until I’ve seen screencaps besides what’s on Criterion’s site.

*sigh*

While I'll pick this up, we're still left waiting on Blu debuts for the Coens' Ladykillers and Buster Scruggs. Seems like a waste for a movie that already has a very fine Blu release.

You can just imagine Barry Sonnenfeld and Lee Kline laughing about this: 4K with HDR? Who needs it!

If it does use the old transfer, this might just be one of those prestige inclusions in the Collection like the Dr. Strangelove release.

At this point I'd take either of those on disc with no special features at all if need be. Would be nice to have their entire filmography on disc.

I would accept a Mill Creek release of Ladykillers at this point.

Yes, I said it.

One of my absolute favorite films of all time!! I hope they will include the original trailer (Not mentioned on the features!) . The trailer alone is a classic!
