Default Lack of special features on Blu-ray?

Hi,

Im just wondering why we have seen very little in the way of special features on Blu Ray titles.

Hoepfully now that we have won the war this changes.

Do you see this improving after 1.1 is out as well??

Thanks!

What kind of special features? A number of titles have had games on them including POTC: DMC and Chicken Little. Every title has an audio commentary and a number of them have "making of" clips. What exactly are you looking for?

If you look at my sig, you can see that I've had experience with both 1.1 profile Picture in Picture (Resident Evil: Extinction) and Picture in Picture on the HD DVD titles but I don't see what is so great about it. Any sort of commentary will ruin your audio enjoyment of the main feature.

I buy movies to enjoy the movies themselves and only look at "Extras" if I'm really bored.

Profile 1.1 is already being used. War, Resident Evil Extinction and I believe Sunshine are all bonus-view (profile 1.1) titles.

Priority for me is the movie... while it's good to know that the special features are there if I feel inclined to watch them... it's not the reason why I chose Blu. PQ and AQ was top choice. I'd really hate it if the studio compromised the AQ just to get the director's commentary in.

However, special features is very important to some people, so important in fact that they would watch the special features in a little window on their screen, obstructing their view of the movie... for these people, the BDA came up with profile 1.1 and 2.0. Coming soon to most players... some titles actually have these already.

There are several titles up and coming later this winter, and early Spring that will be using BD-Live (Profile 2.0) features. All new players coming out support 1.1, as does the PS3, and many new players will support BD-Live, as will the PS3 shortly.

I WANT TO SEE THAT. why can they just throw it all on there so it doesnt go to waste. i love movies and i just want more more more of it. not audio comm. i want all deleted seens....i want from the script meetings to location meetings to casting to day 1 to theater release... thats what i want. i like to get in depth and more knowledeable about my movies, like on blood diamond with that special feature about the diamond trade

I buy a disc for the movie I could care less about outakes and deleted stuff and what every one did on the set and stupid commentary. I would rather have the space on the disc used for the best sound and picture than usless extras

Question

Whats more important/interesting to me is what about the EARLY movies that were released? The ones that didn't have any special features. Do you think they will be re-released with the new features that Blu-ray Disc Players are able and starting to support?

Specifically now with Profile 2.0 being the final (hopefully although to be honest a part of me doubts it) standard for Blu-ray is it likely that the older movies will now have these features added to it?

Really, I thought Disney was doing a pretty good job on theirs. But, to be honest I really don't pay that much attention to the features. I watch my movie in full HD glory, after that I lose interest in the filler....

do you think the studios will pass up the cash?

most egregious: Live Free or Die Hard.

Why the **** would I ever want to purchase the pg-13 version of that when the superior unrated version, content wise anyway, is on dvd?

Its pretty insulting when the content available on the dvd version is more expansive than that on the blu version.

More and more I am interested in special features on disks, but I agree that audio (and video) commentary during the film is bad idea. I would never re-watch a movie just to see it with commentary. I do like some of the making-of features, featurettes, deleted scenes, etc., but I don't usually watch them in association with the movie. They are good fillers to pass the time when running on the treadmill of lifting weights, though.

I got WAR just to watch the movie...I didn't even bother trying out the special feature...didn't even knew it had one...but even now...don't care. After I finish a movie, I would rather spend my extra time in a day to watch another movie or do something else than to sit and watch "special features".

just me...

Just to clarify, the original 5th Element transfer looked like a 5th grader made it from a VHS tape. It was horrendous and as one of the 1st BD releases, it really gave Blu-Ray a black eye. The remaster that was just released is what a true BD should look like. It was so bad in fact, that they gave a FREE replacement to anyone who bought the original.
