Default Is Blu-ray HD Market Competition Still Possible?

Now that the blu-ray format has won the HD war, can another company come into the game with a new HD format that supports more Gigs than 50 and create more competition for Blu-ray? Or is blu-ray the sole format as VHS and DVD is/was in it's time?

Nothing new can come in and compete w/ Blu-ray, which would have at least a 1.5yr advantage. We've already seen optical HDM surpass HD downloads, and any other format has to compete w/ BD's install base. The only way is a miracle (read: Bullsh*t) invention which allows movies of comparable HD quality to be played in a DVD player on one disc.

I think after this past HD war, it wouldn't matter what a CE company came up, no retailer is going to touch it with a ten foot pole. They finally can concentrate on one format and nothing's going to make them go back to a two format hell anytime in the foreseeable future.

According to variable online sources, the developing of blu-ray departed as early as DVD being the ultimate format. Sony began to R&D BD just after it surrended its co-work with philips to toshiba's DVD.

So, if Toshiba want to make a comeback, it'd better to begin to research next-next-gen format now.

There will always be tech advancements in terms of digital storage media, be it optical or hologram. It's use as a digital video media must be preceeded with an upgrade in video fidelity (from 1080p24 with 4:2:2 color depth to 1080p24 4:4:4, for example) in display technology and widespread support from CEs to content provider.

Due to the strength of DVDs and the emergence of BD, we probably won't see another format in at least another 15 years. Hopefully by that time, CDs will be replaced by SACDs or BD-Audio.

We don't need anymore competition after this. We need availability.

Blu-ray will be the only existing HD format for years. The problem isn't technology. I'm sure engineers could come up with a 200 GB format very easily in the next 18 months. The real problem is getting every studio to release on the format. As we saw with this format war, getting the studios to agree on one format was and is very difficult. It took a lot of independent events to drive Paramount and Universal Blu. The studios also know the hesitance that consumers have from continual upgrades.

The bottom line is virtually everyone (consumers, retailers, studios, manufacturers, etc.) want one format which delivers the goods. Now we have it. No other format or means is going to be able to crack into that anytime soon.

Keep in mind HD DVD would have never even launched without Microsoft's motives, backing, and tactics.

I thought the current formats used 4:2:0?

Also, I don't see why a current BD player manufacturer couldn't make a Blu-ray player that was also capable of stuff 'beyond the Blu-ray spec'. eg. perhaps it could read at higher than 50mb/s or read 200GB discs (I think 200GB is part of the spec), or any other addition (like colour/resolution/frame rate/3d update), and when they release titles some studios could include a separate disc for this "super" version of the format - and it could be included on advertising/disc advertising specs

There will be PLENTY of competition, we have one format, but TONS of CEs that will all want of a piece of the pie. So there will be plenty of competition on the hardware front to bring prices down. Not to mention the desire by studios ultimately to have BD overtake DVD as the format of choice.

well, like VHS and DVD eventualy there is always something new. I think it is still too early to know for certain if BD will go mainstream ( but I think it's chances are extremely good). But for anything else to come out and compete in the near future, it won't happen. No one likes revolving formats and no one wants to risk it. So my guess it is too late for anyting else and assuming BD goes mainstream that we are talk9ing about 10y before something else comes into play.
