Default PlayStation 3 sells 1 million units in UK

PlayStation 3 sells 1 million units in UK

Reaches milestone quicker than the PS2

Sony has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the PlayStation 3 has sold over one million units in the UK.

The console was released in the UK on March 23 last year, meaning it has reached the milestone quicker than the PlayStation 2, which took 50 weeks to sell one million units.

Sony announced back in June 2007 that sales had hit the one million mark across the whole of Europe in just nine and a half weeks.

With sales of the most expensive home console reaching important milestones for Sony, publishers are becoming more confident in the format.

Last week, Electronic Arts stated that it expects the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 this year, clocking up between 5 and 6 million units in Europe and up to another 5.5 million units in North America.

Nintendo's Wii reached the one million mark in the UK within 38 weeks on sale, making it the fastest-selling home console in the region.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold one million units within 60 weeks.

ha.. the Uk alone could pretty much hold Blu-ray's sales against HD-DVD at those numbers.. and they wonder why Warner went Blu...

Here's to the next million..

I know a lot of fence sitters, and probably breaking even with the number of ps3 vs 360 owners i know. And i know one playstation hater. UK right now is probably mostly made up with fence sitters, wii gamers or a combination of the two.

you know what...im pretty pissed that when the ps3 first launched EVERYONE said it was a complete failure. it PROBABLY even cost ken kutaragi to retire. no one gave it a fighting chance and look at it now. even milkman from egm is eating his own words right now.

Poor Ken Kutaragi, poor Sony.

Remember, people also said the same about Blu-ray. How it's the next Beta-max and so forth.

For those of us who's been supporting behind the PS3/Blu line, look at the outcome now.

PS3 was released in the UK on March 23, 2007, meaning it has reached the magic number of one million faster than PS2, which took 50 weeks to sell one million units.

These are the current lifetime sales predictions by simExchange:

PS3: 62m
Xbox: 61m
Wii: 119m
DS: 139m
PSP: 57m

Remember that predictions are not facts.

Some nice numbers;

UK PS3 sales > 1 Million
Euro blu-ray sales > 2 Million
Failure rate for PS3 < 3%
Failure rate for X360 > 16%

On top of that the PS3 has been out selling the 360 over the last 4 week period in the UK which fits in nicely with EA's and Sony's prediction that the PS3 will overtake sales of the 360 this year.

i bought my ps3 thinking it was a crap games machine but a must for blu ray.

now fast forward to now and i have sold my x360 and am 100% ps3,the downloads are great if not as often as 360.

the games are great just got dmc4 and its great and you can tell it would be much better if ps3 only as they could play to ps3's specialitys.

i do feel however that more ps3 only games are needed because any ps3 title that is on 360 cant be using the ps3's full potential, if the game is out on a dvd 9 it simply cant be using all the power that blu and ps3 offers.

With the exceptions of CoD4 and DMC4, the best games on PS3 are all exclusive to the platform.

I know it's just an opinion, but this is tough to believe. The 360 is already slowing down sales wise, in only it's 3rd year of existence, and more and more people are talking about a new Microsoft console in only a couple of years.

I can't see how anyone can say the 360 will sell 61 million units given the above, when they are only at 18 millionish now.
