Default Tranformers BD sells 1.2 million units in one week(7.5 million Total units, DVD & BD)

Awesome news on the Bd sales front. A new record for the format. 1.2 million Transformers BD movies sold in the first week with 500,000 units sold on the first day. From HMM:

Quote:
The Paramount Home Entertainment release hit stores Oct. 20 and within a week had become the top-selling home entertainment release of the year, with first-week sales of 7.5 million units, according to Home Media Magazine market research.

The sequel also became the biggest-selling Blu-ray Disc release of 2009, with first-week sales of 1.2 million units.

Transformers also takes the cake for day-one sales, having moved 2 million discs its first day in stores, 500,000 of them on the high-definition Blu-ray Disc format.

It is good, but unless my math is wrong, it went from a 25% pdm 1st day to a "kinda low" 16% pdm for the week on that title, which is weird after a 36% pdm on Watchmen.
Well, the $$ should be huge anyhow, I was just expecting a much bigger pdm on this title for the 1st week (Max estimated last year TDK doing a 20% pdm 1st week).

Yowza!

It almost beat the previous single week total in one day.

Edit: or was 600,000 for one day for The Dark Knight?

That is kind of low in comparison to other titles.

Wait a sec, it didn't break the record:

Quote:
The Dark Knight sold more than 10 million discs its first week in stores, Warner reported. Factoring in sales to rental dealers as well as consumers, The Dark Knight sold 13.5 million discs worldwide, including a record 1.7 million on the nascent high-definition Blu-ray Disc format.

I think that 1.7 million is world wide, it should be 1 million for the U.S.

Huge blockbusters like Transformers appeal to people that generally do not purchase movies, and in that demographic Blu-ray ownership declines. Thus, the sales results which make sense.

A cogent observation. Transformers 2 performed quite well though.

I wonder how much the percentage is skewed due to the exclusive "Big Screen" edition being sold at Walmart. I would guess that more BD purchasers bought it there then normally would.

TDK's first week numbers includes sales to rental locations. I think TF2's numbers only include those sold to consumers. I think Home Media Magazine only includes consumer sales figures.

The headline will definitely grab attention. This will become the highest selling BD title once Q4 is over with. I believe TDK was at 2.5 mil copies. I think TF2 is going to reach 3 mil by year's end.

of course, there are more blu-ray adopters now than for TDK, so transformers is kinda cheating!

we should do: "most blu-rays sold per blu-ray adopter"

Mmmh I understand that. But was Transformers 2 (flick based on a cartoon about giant robots) really that much more "general public" than...

- Watchmen (36% pdm)
- Wolverine (27% pdm)
- Gran Torino, Valkyrie, Taken (20% pdm)
- Push, Knowing, The International (18% pdm)

Don't get me wrong, speaking in volume, the sales are great.
But the ratio vs DVD is terrible imo.

Transformers 2 is an explosion/SFX flick, which literally begs to be seen in HD.
It was (is?) supposed to be one of the champions of Blu Ray for the end of 2009 (with Star Trek, UP and T4).

16% vs DVD?
Just trying to put things in perspective here. I really think it is a disappointment on the format overtaking front, that is all.

Pretty sure it'll have good legs on the format, at least.

I enjoyed the picture and audio quality, not the movie.
