Kirsten Dunst (The Power Of The Dog) and Eric Mabius (Cruel Intentions) star in the third exciting motion picture in The Crow legacy — The Crow: Salvation! Wrongly executed for the murder of his girlfriend, Alex Corvis (Mabius) returns from the dead and sets out to find the real killer. Aided by his girlfriend's sister (Dunst) — and under the guidance of the mysterious crow — he unmasks a tangled web of corruption and deceit in his quest for retribution and redemption.

Featuring supporting performances from Jodi Lyn O'Keefe (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later), William Atherton (Ghostbusters), Fred Ward (Tremors), and Walton Goggins (Django Unchained) and a top-shelf soundtrack, The Crow: Salvation is a stylish tale of vengeance taking flight.

I thought I had this one, maybe a multiple Crow film disc or something...

Anyway, wasn't sure so preordered it. Just watched it on Vudu recently and enjoyed it. I can honestly say I like the first 3 films.

Guess I need to take a closer look at my library.

Only if they were given a better transfer than the old StudioCanal Region B release, which was not well received. Otherwise, it's not worth a $30 price tag for a tired, substandard transfer and 24 year old bonus material.

The only decent Crow sequel.

I'm tempted, but that price...

Love The Flys song from this.

I’m not sure if it was on Blu before. When Lionsgate and Echo Bridge divvied the Miramax library up there were weird things like Lionsgate got the Tarantino films, Echo Bridge got the Rodriguez films, for example, and another one was that Lionsgate got the odd-numbered Crow films and Echo Bridge got the even-numbered Crow films, and of course Echo Bridge released City of Angels solo, on a double-feature disc with Wicked Prayer, released Wicked Prayer as a filler title in random DVD collections etc.

Meanwhile Lionsgate didn’t give a shit about this movie and only cared about releasing the original. So yeah, I’m 99% sure this is the North American Blu debut for this movie.

Presuming this transfer will be close to (or the same as) the one used on Studio Canal's UK Double Feature from twelve years ago. Sky_Captain posted his thoughts on it in that disc's thread.

City of Angels looks good to me. There some very minor sharpening going on and I mean incredibly minor. The film has a weird hazy look and I never felt anything looked over-sharpened. No DNR, nice healthy grain structure. DTS-HD-MA 5.1 English and German, with an English PCM track as well. English subs and two German sub tracks. You're asked to chose English or German upon disc bootup.

Two featurettes, neither of which I've checked out.

Onto Salvation...

[Show spoiler]It still looks like a TV movie, I don't give a shit what anyone says. The whole thing screams Movie of The Week.
This is a very dated master, with a fair smattering of EE applied. It's still watchable, though, if only because it still has grain, or at least the illusion of grain present. English is the only language option, both in DTS-HA-MA 5.1 and LPCM 2.0. HoH English subs also included.

[Show spoiler]Extras are a single featurette. Also has one of the worst looking menus I've seen, in a very long time.

Both movies are encoded in AVC
[Show spoiler]and region locked to B.

[Show spoiler]City of Angels runs 01:30:44

Salvation runs 01:41:54

Maybe if it was all 3 of the sequels but $30 for just 1 is too much for me for a blu-ray. Digital is good enough here.

I could see them dropping a similar site exclusive for Wicked Prayer and then giving City of Angels a little CE love on a 4K UHD release.

Only thing is, if they were gonna do a similar Wicked Prayer release then it would have made sense to drop it alongside this Salvation release.

I was thinking the same thing; if SF have this one, I could see them having City of Angels and Wicked Prayer, with City of Angels getting a Collector's Edition release later on, probably to tie into the new movie.

I used to enjoy this as a young (naive) teen, but revisited it a few weeks ago and it's pretty bad. Eric Mabius is pretty terrible lead, but the script didn't do him any favors. Everything about the film feels super DTV and low budget though with some truly embarrassing CGI. It's like the Weinsteins had this DTV machine and they fed movies like this into and money printed out.

Edit: All that negative stuff being said, I'd probably buy this if it wasn't $30 to replace my ancient DVD. What I really want is a proper City of Angels release because I think that's a pretty underrated film.

It’s kinda a subtle difference but with The Crow franchise having an actual TV series and a couple of direct-to-video sequels it’s apparent that there is a noticeable bump in production value going from TV to DTV. But yeah, it still had a big X-Files/Millennium vibe. Coincidentally, the writer actually worked on those shows and even ran Millennium in its final season.

Was anyone else involved in the Crow fandom back in the day when Miramax was playing games with this movie? All these years later it seems pretty clear to me that it was direct-to-video from the jump and that its token theatrical run was a scheme to get cable networks to air it and Musicland/Sam Goody to stock the soundtrack album, but the weirdo Crow fans ran with the idea that this was some hidden gem and started petitions and letter-writing campaigns to get Miramax to give it a wide release lulz.

In my mind I can picture those old websites. Red text on black. Frames. Page counter at the bottom.

Easy pass, would rather a decent release of City of Angels. Don't think they'll be FOMO with this one

If it's not a new transfer, Shout won't be getting my money.

You presume that this new release is gonna use a SC master from 12 years ago? You do know that Paramount owns the title now right? They haven't been handing licensees decrepit old masters. Cursed got a 4k remaster, Prophecy movies got UHD's, The Faculty is coming out on 4k, Dracula 2000 is getting a BD with(I think) a newer 2k master. All the Halloweens from H6 to Resurrection? 4k's. See where I'm going with this?

I’m not losing any sleep and still get many other releases from Shout. It’s just a bummer, that’s all.

Looking at your collection, I can see that you haven't bought a single one of these Shout Exclusives that use old masters. I can also see that you are basing your limited observations on the wide standard releases of other more popular titles. Don't you think Shout would put out a full wide release if they (or Paramount) went through all the work of making a new master??

Work on your detective skills. I own Twice Dead and Space Truckers. I buy exclusives that interest me. I can't speak for releases that were licensed from other studios, but Paramount has been giving labels masters that aren't ancient. I'm not even saying you're totally wrong, but the possibility isn't as likely as you think.
