This would not have been my guess for first Peckinpah in 4K, but I'll take it.

Yes, I will take this too.
Third on my Peckinpah wishlist after THE WILD BUNCH & THE GETAWAY but I will happily take this.

I hope Studio Canal have done a complete redo. I know Peckinpah wanted a desaturated look for this, but I don't think he would have liked the flat greeny picture on the Blu-ray.

Along with Junior Bonner, this could perhaps be Peckinpah's most under-appreciated film.

I've held off buying the Blu-ray for a while. The 4K UHD will be a day one purchase.

The release date on this title is only two months away, unless things go awry.
Does anyone here have any details on the upgrade? Bonus features, PQ, art? I'm not great on sleuthing upcoming products like many others here are.
Is it coming from Australia / NZ region? Maybe Imprint?

Quote:
Based on the novel by Will Heinrich, Sam Peckinpah's only war film is an intense and uncompromising affair that brilliantly reflects both the futility of conflict and the director’s fascination with individuals confronted by events beyond their control.

A World War II tale told from the German perspective, Cross Of Iron follows a platoon of German soldiers in Russia when the German Wehrmacht forces had been decimated and the Germans were retreating along the Russian front. Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is a German corporal and recipient of the Iron Cross who has grown disenchanted with Hitler's war machine. When Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell) assumes charge, the pair are thrown into immediate conflict, the autocratic but ultimately cowardly Stransky coveting the loyalty and honour Steiner commands.

Evocatively shot by John Coquillon (Billy the Kid) in sombre tones to emphasise the horrors of combat, the superlative lead performances are matched by David Warner and James Mason as war-weary senior officers. Viewed as one of Peckinpah's most powerful works, it’s an unflinching vision of the Second World War.

God, I hate steelbooks. It seems studios now understand that they can charge 50% more just to release films in these tacky monstrosities and people will gladly pay.

Hoping this has a simultaneous standard release so I don't have to wait, possibly in vain, as with The Man Who Fell To Earth. Otherwise, fantastic news.

Very nice indeed! I see Studio Canal's Man Who Fell To Earth 4K steelbook is down from £30 to £20. I'll pick up Cross of Iron when it's similarly reduced.

The credit sequence - like that of the Wild Bunch - is superlative. A tour de force of editing, it's really quite unforgettable. Cross of Iron is a great war movie/western, and something of a nihilistic test of endurance.

Yes, it's brilliant and Peckinpah's last great film.

I think we have the continental Europeans to thank for it getting a UHD release as it was so popular there it even had a 1979 sequel (which I've never seen).

Yep, give us a regular release at 20 quid and I’ll probably bite.

Yeah, a disc in a tin, I don't get it either. For a special release, far better to a have a MediaBook (I think America used to call them DigiBooks, Warner released a few), they're still very popular in Germany.

I don't understand your frustration - there will be a standard release in addition to the Steelbook and, yes, it will be cheaper You automatically assumed the Steelbook would be the only option?

I chose the Steelbook because I prefer the artwork on it. I'm not a huge steelbook fan but I don't dislike them. Lots of people love them, which is why studios make them. Should they charge more? As long as we have a choice, I wouldn't worry about it.

I didn't automatically assume that as my initial post made clear and hope there is a simultaneous standard release.
