Warner Bros The Batman Part II (2027)

'The Batman': Matt Reeves Is Interested In Including a "Grounded" Mr. Freeze In Potential Sequels

Quote:
The Batman story has seen myriad adaptations for the screen, each one boasting its own tone and style: some are gritty and dark, like the Nolan trilogy, whereas the classic Adam West iteration is best known for its gaudy, colorful campiness. (Clooney, and arguably Michael Keaton, fell somewhere comfortably between the two.) And unlike Peacemaker, Batman has a broader coiterie of super villains to face, from The Joker and Bane through to lesser known foes like Clayface and Man-Bat. The latter are on the campier, more fantastical side of things.

Director Matt Reeves recently spoke at a press event that Collider was a part of, and explained how he was drawn towards a more "grounded" interpretation of the comics. But that isn't to say the more fantastical villains couldn't get involved, with one particularly cold character seemingly a favorite of his. He said:

"In my view, I just feel drawn to finding the grounded version of everything. So to me it would be a challenge in an interesting way to try and figure out how that could happen, even the idea of something like Mr. Freeze, that such a great story, right? I think there's actually a grounded version of that story, which could be really powerful and could be really great. So, I love the fantastical side of Batman, but this iteration, obviously, while being, to me, I think it is very comics faithful, but I don't think that this one is necessarily, it doesn't lean as hard into the fantastical, I guess. But I think to me what would be interesting would be to try and unwind the fantastical and see, well, how could that make sense here? And so that's kind of my view, how I see it."

Give me the Mad Hatterrrrrr.

Grounded Mr. Freeze is still gonna be supernaturalish.

Mad Hatter with mind control devices is crazy but can still be grounded enough to be pulled off. He can be like a fortune 500 executive that has overly productive workers. Everyone thinks it's becayse it's a great company to work for but he's really got their chips or cards slipped in Everytime they clock in.

It won't have Freeze. Even if it does, he won't be anything like the Freeze you know. He won't instantly freeze things with an ice gun. He'll probably walk around in a hazmat suit or some shit and spread a virus that gradually crystalizes cells. Because Warner Brothers can't deal with the fact that Batman was intended for kids and teens. Clayface, Freeze, Man-Bat, Poison Ivy, immortal Ra's al Ghul, not happening. Not without totally gimping them. Sort of like Bane, who doesn't even get his veins pumped with Venom in TDKR. Being gritty and realistic makes it important, don't you know? Can't have Batman in a textile outfit either. Full armor or it's not getting greenlit.

Im confused.....If Reeves wants to keep it real, why would Batman have his "armor" on instead of his textile costume?

Wouldnt a "real" Batman wear spandex and not the Nolan-esque/Reeves style armor?

This schitt is getting silly.

How that makes any sense? In real life police and soldiers etc use armor instead just camo jacket... Nolan and reeves batman are mortal men in realistic world so of course they would wear armor..

Cannot confirm if right or wrong since the movie isn't out yet, nor do we know if Freeze will or will not show up or as to how far grounded his character is, should he show up at all. It's all hyperbolic pessimism until then. Hyperbolic pessimism varies.

He’s referring to trends, not the actual movie, since it doesn’t yet exist, obviously.

Good, the garish campy style should be left in the 80’s.

Batman needs to be theatrical, in the classic sense, and lean somewhat into its more fantastic elements, so that the whole idea of a costumed vigilante fighting eccentric super villains doesn't come off as pretentious, exceedingly self-righteous and stupid. "Grounded version of everything," the director says. He's delusional. If Batman were grounded, the character would be dead, paralyzed or in jail. Or he'd give up his dumb idea and instead use his businesses and wealth to help fix the corruption and socioeconomic factors that lead to so much crime. A "realistic" billionaire vigilante dressed like a bat... Give me a break.

More comic-accurate doesn't have to mean garish. Have some imagination.

Comic book super hero elements rarely translate well to the big screen. What looks fine in print/cartoon form looks stupid in reality.

I don’t have a problem with the gritty approach. It gave us the best film of its type of all time, ‘The Dark Knight’. I also enjoyed the heck out of ‘Joker’.

I’m not saying your way can’t work, it worked a treat for ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) but we shouldn’t be concerned about more realistic approaches imo. I think it really suits Batman, your way or my way, it’s still fantasy stuff.

Considering Reeve's The Batman thus far looks very comic accurate to the more grounded stories, I'm totally fascinated at what he would do with a villain like Freeze or Hatter.
