Default Revolutionary Road was incredible

I just watched this last night and imo what an incredible movie...I honestly think both Leo and Kate should have been nominated for Oscars (although not necessarily have won). Great performances, powerful story, and incredible music (that also should have been nominated). Anyone else agree/disagree?

Academy rules state that an actor or actress cannot be nominated multiple times in the same category, and they decided Kate Winlet's role in The Reader was a leading role (unlike the Golden Globes, where she won the Best Supporting Actress despite the obvious fact that she was the lead in The Reader), so she could only receive 1 nomination and that went to her role in The Reader.

ah right, forgot about that. i have to say i think rev road was the stronger performance, but that's just me. i definitely think leo should have been nominated, and i see he was for the golden globe.

edit: i see kate won golden globe for it, awesome

I thought it was very good and I am not really a fan of Leo... I missed the last 20 minutes of of it as I was watching it on a flight quite a few months ago. But I had read the book before so I know the ending but when I get the chance I will rewatch it properly.

Great performances, no doubt, but overall didn't like the story. Just not for me, I guess.

Great performance...crazy ending. Kate is the new Streep and Dicaprio probably will become the new DeNiro.

I think Cate Blanchett is probably 'the new' Streep in terms of talent and Kate whilst is very good, to me she just lacks the final 'edge' to me. DiCaprio has come along way since Titanic the Titanic days of wooden acting and is easily one of the best actors in film today.

As for the film, it was beautifully made and very 'enjoyable', however much like the reviewer on this site, I don't know how many times I will watch it as whilst the ending was beautifully shot, acted etc, it had such a strong sense of hopelessness that it can be very difficult to watch. I will say I did find Kates performance to be the weakest part of the film, albeit it was still very good I found that it paled in comparison to DiCaprio and the supporting cast. That being said, I do intend on buying it on blu when I see it at a reasonable price (it always seems to be $40 or more in AU, which makes me ).

If anyone has watched the deleted scenes I really do wish they kept the scene when Dicaprio comes home after being at the hospital (when he reads the letter and how he reacts is stunning and I have no idea why it wasn't included in the film).

I completely agree with the praise for this film. I think that it certainly was deserving of an Oscar nomination, as it was better than Frost\Nixon (good film but not best picture worthy), Benjamin Button (a great cinematic achievement, but not a very good film and a pointless story), The Reader (I have major problems with the theme). I do, however, think Slumdog was better, and while I like Rev. Road much better, I'm not sure whether I think it is better than Milk or not. (for the record, I thought Changeling was better than Rev. Road and while I like Kate Winslet and think she is a better actress, I thought Angelina Jolie was better than Winslet in both The Reader and Rev. Road).

I also agree that DiCaprio was incredible. For the people who still claim he is not a good actor, regardless of whether you actually like him or not, just take a look at his filmography. He has had one of the best decades for an actor in terms of quality films and performances in the history of cinema. This film emphasizes that assertion. I've seen all of the films whose actors were nominated for best actor, and while Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn were clearly better, I think DiCaprio certainly deserved a nod. Frank Langella's performance was great and he had all of the tics of Nixon down, but I did not feel it was that much better than Leo's. Richard Jenkins was incredible in The Visitor, but I think Leo was equally as good. And Brad Pitt, while I think he is an underrated actor (and should have been nominated for Jesse James), I did not think he was anything special in Benjamin Button whatsoever. That being said, while it would be wrong to characterize Dicaprio not being nominated as a "travesty," I think that his performance was fantastic and should have been more recognized.

I also feel that as good as Kate Winslet was in The Reader, I thought she was much better in Revolutionary Road. The Reader was blatantly set up as Oscar bait by having Kate play a supposedly sympathetic Nazi and then having her play the aged one as well, but Winslet displayed a much greater range of emotion in Revolutionary Road, and her silent acting was phenomenal.

I think that Sam Mendes, one of my favorite directors, got snubbed once again (the other being for the fantastic Road to Perdition). Yes, Danny Boyle clearly deserved to win, and David Fincher deserved a nom because of the scope of Benjamin Button, but Mendes was undoubtedly better than Ron Howard, Gus van Sant, and Stephen Daldry. While they are each good directors, none of them did anything in their films that stood out directorily. They all did well with the material they had, but the way Mendes is able to film particular scenes is astounding (on that note, the cinematography could have been given a nod).

As for the score of the film, I agree that it was beautiful and added a lot to certain scenes. I think that it was def better than Defiance (great composer, but did not add anything to the film), Benjamin Button, Wall E (really??), and Milk. The only problem with it is that it is so similar to Road to Perdition.

Overall, a terrific film and one that I think deserved more recognition than it got last year. At the same time, I echo the sentiments of many on this site in regards to the replay value. I had the film in my hands for $13.99 at Best Buy two weeks back and couldn't bring myself to buy it. The film was just so wrenching that I do not know if I can watch it again (much like Schindler's List and The Deer Hunter).

Best,

Josh

Oh, and I also completely disasgree that Cate Blanchett is better than Kate Winslet and is more appropriately called the "next Meryl Streep." Blanchett was unbelievably good as Elizabeth, but that is the only performance I was impressed by. She was good in The Aviator, although I did not think she deserved to win. I thought she was terrible in Benjamin Button, completely wooden. Yes, I think she is a good actress but overrated for my taste. Kate Winslet I think is head and shoulders above the other actresses of her generation. Her ability to convey emotion and vulnerability has no equal, and she is as at home playing someone beautiful (Titanic) and someone rugged (The Reader, Little Children).

I didn't get how it ended? Good movie though, I guess, headlined by powerful performances by the 2 main characters. Definitely better than CCoBB and Slumdog Millionaire.

Just a matter of opinion really. Both are very good and have given terrific performances (though I haven't seen Elizabeth before ). In all honesty I wouldn't really call either of them the next Meryl Streep, as even Meryl has had her dud performances and I don't see the point in benchmarking in such a way.

I do strongly disagree with Cate giving a wooden performance in CCOBB, I thought it was terrific. In any case I think i'll have to check out Elizabeth, if it is indeed as good as people say i'm sure to be wowed.

[Show spoiler]She wasn't in the hospital because she was pregnant (will no directly at least). She was in the hospital as she tried aborting her baby with the device we see earlier, and in doing so at such a 'late' stage of her pregnancy (that if done by a certain time can abort the baby by quite effectively flushing it out) there where likely to be complications (this is mentioned earlier in the film) and she bleed to death as a result. Similar problems did use to occur and still do in some parts of the world, but in many countries legal 'safer' ways to abort babies exist. I hope that helped, I'm not quite as cogent as usual as my mind is a little fried from far to much study.

I watched this last night for the first time on Netflix.

What a remarkably delightful story about hope and the triumph of the human spirit.

...the ending was simply joyful.
