Default Is This a Receiver or Player Problem?

Even after all these years of technology advancing, I'm still running a trusty Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player and Onkyo 605 AVR that's served us immensely well since acquiring the gear circa 2007/2008. Aside from the dreaded loader issue popping up on my Oppo (wherein certain discs just won't be read or loaded), the gear has been stellar.

However, I have noticed that on some Lionsgate/Summit releases (Blu-ray rentals) that contain Atmos or TrueHD soundtracks, there will be a kind of audio dropout issue that I can't explain (and which forces me to stop the disc and not watch it; it's happened on several titles in the past such as the Total Recall remake and John Wick 2). It just happened again last night when we rented The Hitman's Bodyguard (Blu-ray, Dolby Atmos played back in TrueHD) and I wanted to ask if this was a player or receiver issue...

My gear is HDMI 1.3a-compliant, and my AVR doesn't support Atmos or DTS:X, so when these soundtracks are played my Onkyo delivers them as 7.1 TrueHD mixes (albeit in 5.1 on my setup). Everything is running HDMI. Halfway through the film last night, the audio dropped out and wouldn't come back (watching Hitman's Bodyguard with the core TrueHD track) so I needed to stop the disc and rewatch it selecting the alternate English 2.0 Dolby Digital mix (which worked, and which played back fine using Pro Logic II decoding).

Is this because my AVR is so outdated that the TrueHD cores of certain soundtracks are dropping out? Does it have something to do with Dolby Atmos played back in the core TrueHD form on my system? What's weird is that Blu-rays that I have PURCHASED with Atmos soundtracks -- including Wonder Woman, Batman v Superman, San Andreas and Terminator Genisys --- do NOT exhibit this dropout issue; from what I can gather, this has only happened with certain Lionsgate RENTALS.

If anyone could shed any light here, it would be appreciated.

It is in the player as the 83 has issues with any disc that utilizes seamless branching. It is not an Atmos thing or a rental thing. I had the same player and ran into the same frustrations with discs I own. Lionsgate was the main studio that had a few titles where I just gave up. Oppo fixed it with the 93, but there is no firmware upgrade available on the 83 to make it work. Once I got the Oppo 203,the same Total Recall disc played fine.

First of all, thanks so much for replying, 'mule; it's greatly appreciated.

Wow, that's a bit shocking to learn that it's the 83; are you sure? Because it seems to me that this would be an AUDIO DECODING issue on the AVR side with these Atmos/TrueHD signals (being that the receiver is so outdated in this way)...are you positive it's the player?

Either way, I was planning on upgrading to the 203 (Oppo's UHD player; or is it the 205?) once I purchased a new 4K display, but I don't know when that will be.

I went into it thinking the same, but Oppo confirmed it was on their end with some older legacy players. I was getting ready to jump into the Atmos / DTS X pool anyway, so I needed to say goodbye to the 83 anyway.

I'm forced to agree with the ol'mule on this one. if you don't want to spend on the 203, I hear that a good player is the Sony UBP-X800 and it's under half the cost of a 203.

I don't own the sony or the oppo 203, but, I think your going to need to do something.

best of luck keep us posted buddy.

p.s. hope you and yours had a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Hey My Fellow SXRD Brethren,

Thanks for the input; it's not that I don't want to spend on the 203 (it IS the player I want for an upgrade), it's that I wanted to wait to get it along with a new 4K display (though I just don't know when that's gonna be possible, monetarily) -- but being that the BDP-83 has been having other issues as of late for me, including the drawer open/close problem and the player not loading discs (it started with DVDs and now it's spreading to Blu-ray), I may need to get the 203 in my system before the display...

Would the 203 make a good Blu-ray player (without using it for UHD playback right now) as connected to a 1080p display (like my SXRD) or does this not make sense?

Hope you and your family had a good Thanksgiving, as well -- thank you!

P.S. Did you ever read my thread in the rear projection displays section about the new lamp I just put in my SXRD? I would sure love to hear your input about it; no one has responded as of yet...

No worries. Funny thing is that Total Recall is not that great of a movie but watching Kate and Jessica tear into each other is an interesting way to spend a couple of hours.

Oh, I totally know what you mean...I'd love to "tear into them" for a couple of hours, if you...get my meaning...

But you're right; the film wasn't that good, and I remember going back to my local Blockbuster at the time to return a couple of copies because of the audio issue on my system...I ended up getting the DVD so I could just finish the freakin' thing...

I have not upgraded to a 4K projector yet, as my 1080p projector is still in play, and the 203 works well with it.....Blu-ray or UHD. It was kinda bumpy originally as I was an early buyer of the Oppo once it came out, as there were a bunch of firmware upgrades needed to work out some kinks. Since they eventually got it right, no issues to report.

in my HT i don't yet have a 4K tv, but i do have a UHD player that i use for discs that have ATMOS/DTS:X and their HD Blu-ray's don't have. the picture looks great and works with no problem.

feel free and easy my friend to go ahead and purchase that 203 for your 1080p SXRD, mine works just fine with my SXRD getting video from my UHD player!

EDIT: Oh yes, you were referring to the AUDIO problem I was asking about when the lamp blew; thanks for that (that's been resolved with the new lamp change). I actually started another thread in the DISPLAY DISCUSSION area about the way the TV now looks with the new lamp...if you could lend me some insights on that one I'd appreciate it bud.

Thanks; in your gear signature, I think you have the 203 mentioned as the "BDP203"...isn't this incorrect?

I don't see the 203 listed in your signature, unless you didn't update it yet...

I don't have a 203, I have a Philips UHD player, for now.

I was telling you if you wanted to get the 203 and use it with your 1080p SXRD that it would be show just fine on it.

Indeed; I'm only human.

Also, I saw my inbox stating I had a new response in that thread after I wrote the initial reply to you, hence my "EDIT" moniker.
