yeah lay flat as the HDD could get hot on the left side (looking from front).

I think the air flow diagram of the PS3 shows air is sucked in that side also but not as much as the rear...

Check this fan out inside it

I have mine standing up as do many people and there's no issue with anything including heat. Standing it up doesn't block any vents either by the way.

I keep mine laying down, as I do with all of my other systems that have the option of being horizantal or vertical. I've never understood what is so appealing about standing the system up on it's side.

If you want to put it behind the television so you don't have to look at its ugly mug it's quite useful to be able to set it on end.

horizontal. its a more natural position for the optical drive and hard drive anyway.

Standing. Much better airflow. The hdd stays cool since heat rises. Ive had it standing since launch day by my tv.

Laying down is better. Don't remember where I was them but someone took some thermal images of the PS3 standing and laying down, and the laying down pics the heat dissipated throughout the system better then standing it up.

Got the Pictures from PS3 Forum Post

It clearly shows the unit runs cooler horizontal then vertical.
