Count Down to BDP-S1/Sony BDP-S1 Shipping?

Just got this from Sony concerning my order for the BDP-S1. Looks like it's on target for next week.

Dear Sony customer,

We are excited to announce that BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc players will soon be shipping. We know that you have been waiting patiently for this product and strongly believe that the Blu-ray experience will be worth the wait.

This notice is to advise you that in order for the BDP-S1 to playback BD-R/RE discs, a firmware upgrade will be required.

In 2007, Sony plans to issue a disc-based product upgrade at no charge that will allow the playback of most discs using the BD-R/RE format. This is not in any way related to the BDP-S1’s ability to play BD-ROM discs, like the packaged movies you would purchase from a film studio, but will increase functionality for customers who can take advantage of it.

Additionally, an upgrade to enhance BD-Java capability will be available soon.

No advanced audio = no sale.

It really is a pisser, no 24p on systems that plan on doing advanced audio decoding, no advanced audio decoding on systems that support 24p.

The Sony site still list the following:

Dolby® Digital Plus(Dolby® Digital audio stream only), Dolby® TrueHD (Dolby® Digital audio stream only) dts®-HD (dts audio stream only) Digital Out and decoding capability
Dolby® Digital and dts® 5.1channel Output

Doesn't look like it will support the newer audio formats.

does anyone have a clue what this means? i get the feeling it will decode the format and output it over analog outs. otherwise, only the core over optical or coaxial.

As I understand it the Blu-ray standard requires that all supported audio formats be passed through the stream (Optical or HDMI). Decoding in the player is optional. You'll need a reciever that can decode the various audio codecs if you get the BDP-S1. It will also depend on the audio options that are offered on the disc. I can live with that for now.

I think it means the player will extract the Dolby Digital and DTS core data OFF the DD Plus, DD TrueHD and DTS HD/MA and then pass through using optical/coax digital out or decode in the player; the same is true for basic DD and DTS.

I assume if you want more, you have to get a receiver capable of decoding the advance audio codecs via HDMI 1.2/3 input which are not yet here.

Sony's First Blu-ray Player: Finally Shipping?

After months of fits, starts and failed release dates, Sony's first-generation Blu-ray player is finally shipping to consumers -- at least according to the company's consumer website.

Perhaps second only to Sony's own PlayStation 3 in terms of hype and anticipation among Blu-ray early adopters, the $1,000 BDP-S1 was originally expected to hit stores simultaneously with the studio's initial Blu-ray launch titles. Needless to say that never happened, and a raft of numerous technical issues delayed the player throughout the summer and fall.

But hungry consumers who had pre-ordered the deck and suffered through months of "Player Not Yet Shipped" messages were finally greeted by the following email from the SonyStyle website yesterday, according to several readers who passed along the news:

"We are excited to announce that BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc players will soon be shipping. We know that you have been waiting patiently for this product and strongly believe that the Blu-ray experience will be worth the wait."

Unfortunately, the message also included details on two future firmware upgrades required to play BD-R/RE format Blu-ray discs, as well as access interactive content on BD-Java-encoded titles. But while it is never a good sign when a new player already need enhancements, we're sure fans aren't complaining after such a long wait.

We'll keep you posted on any potential release issues with the BDP-S1 as the player finally hits the market in the coming days.

With CES right around the corner who is going to drop $900 on the Sony that does not feature the advanced audio codecs? I want to buy a BD player but with so few "A" list titles available I can wait. I suspect many others feel the same way.

Yes it is shipping!! Someone at AVS just reported that they bought one at bestbuy. I already asked him if there is any documentation regarding the advanced audio codec support.

Called my local Bestbuy. They said they are in stock, but can't sell them until the 4th.

I would go in. I called the store and they said they did not have them, walked in and asked and they went and got one for me.
