This seminal film has never been on Blu Ray in R1 as far as I can tell. The two films Mike Nichols made for Avco Embassy in the early 70s ('The Day of the Dolphin' being the other) really need an R1 release.

A highly wanted film for me as well. No Blu anywhere in the world to date and really can’t imagine why given the director, cast and reception. Hopefully one day soon.
You will be glad to know that The Day of the Dolphin has been announced by Kino for an upcoming release. Now that the Paramount apathy seems to be melting a bit, Catch-22 would be great as well. |

It's available in Spain. I have it.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Carna...lu-ray/214192/ The picture quality is pretty good however it's an old print with many white specs. The biggest issue is if you watch it with the English track, the Spanish subtitles turn on and you can't turn them off. |

I just got the Japanese Region A version released by Kadokawa. I just flipped through the chapters now. It looks like the same transfer as mentioned above on the Spanish Region B version. Mostly good, but not a restored print so a lot of white speckles and flecks. Not a lot of grain, but it does look like a newer scan just not restored.
You can turn off the Japanese subtitles. It says the copyright is held by StudioCanal. Kino put out some of the Alec Guinness titles they control. |

Most of the AVCO/Embassy film library is controlled by MGM and since amazon is about to buy MGM we can expect to see this on physical media about never...

This happened a couple of years ago. Maybe in Region 1 soon...

Since Indicator is putting out the 4K in Region 2, can we assume that Criterion is doing this soon?

![]() They could always announce it next month... but they could also sit on it for years, as they've done with plenty of titles. |

Kino actually picked up the rights to Carnal Knowledge, but in 2020, the Insider revealed that they dropped it because StudioCanal wouldn't provide them access to the elements. They then say another label has picked it up. It very likely is Criterion, though I am surprised it hasn't shown up on the Criterion Channel with any Janus/Criterion logo playing before it. It was on the Criterion Channel in June 2023 at least, that’s when I logged a watch of it on Letterboxd (it may have been leaving that month, bc I usually focus on watching leaving stuff first). I do not remember if it had the logos though.

Yeah, it was there from June till the end of November 2023 as part of a Method Acting Collection. No logos as far as I know as I imagine that would have put all this speculation of whether they have it or not to rest.
