Wonder if it will have the Roadshow version in SD, or a combination with SD inserts.

The Mediabook with vastly superior artwork is exclusive to the new Koch Films shop, which is still not shipping to the USA.

Quote:
Extras and special features
  • First release worldwide on Blu-ray
  • German and English cinema trailer
  • Original Director's Cut version in SD (approx. 202 minutes)
  • Video essay "Duke's dream project - Mike Siegel on THE ALAMO" (approx. 37 minutes)
  • Making of documentary "John Wayne's THE ALAMO" (approx. 70 minutes)
  • Contemporary documentary "The Spirit of ALAMO" (approx. 51 minutes)
  • Documentation "John Wayne - An American Legend" (approx. 58 minutes)
  • Three slide shows with rare advertising material and photos from the set (approx. 36 minutes)
  • Booklet by Mike Siegel
There obviously isn't a German dub available for the long version, so that and the 202-minute run time should hopefully mean it's in the original NTSC and not PAL format.

blu-ray : theatrical 162 minutes
blu-ray : director's cut in SD 202 minutes
DVD: theatrical 155 minutes

Pity they couldn't have reconstructed the DC in HD using SD inserts.

The release date is over two months away. I expect it'll be announced in other countries.

Who did the "director's cut"....? Somehow I doubt John Wayne had anything to do with it.

The "Directors Cut" is actually the longer Roadshow version that premiered first, while the 162 mins RT for the general release theatrical cut that the OCN was butchered to. Story goes that there were only a couple prints of the Premire/Roadshow version ever made, and MGM/UA got a hold of one of the last surviving 70mm prints and used it for a 1980s video restoration.

Unfortunately, this only surviving 70mm element was not cared for properly in MGM's archives and requires a ton of expensive restoration work no one is willing to spend.

You would have hoped some of the film billionaires who have funded other 4K restoration as seen with some of the Warner Archive titles may have coughed up.

Guess the problem is the negative as you say is in a shocking state so a restoration would cost a fortune and John Wayne probably isn’t the most popular actor in modern Hollywood.

We need some of the rich Texans to pay instead

Because it won't look great, since it needs a full blown restoration. Not ridiculous, if you want a shoddy-looking disc based on a DVD master. Because that's the only master available to use.

Koch is not a shoddy one. They are not known for lousy SD releases in HD containers. May be it won't be 4K crisp, but it will still be a good BD. I'm sure, otherwise they would not released the title..........We will see. I ordered the Cover B in the Koch Shop

I doubt it. This is solely a Koch domestic release.

I agree about Koch, they do some great stuff, & I have a few of their releases. I bought the Mediabook of Taras Bulba (1962) & it was better than other Blu-ray releases, stereo soundtrack & cleaned-up picture. I'll be buying this one.

Wow! I can't believe anyone is even attempting to do this!

If they got ahold of the lone SD master of the roadshow made for the Laserdisc release it should be the best we've gotten to date. That lone 70mm print was discovered and used on the LD boxset release and was spiffed up in the late format era along with select other MGM titles in very limited quantities with almost identical covers. The difference being usually a spiffed up transfer and addition of ac3. That is why the ac3 version of the Roadshow is so much rarer and more valuable. It's the most valuable LD I own and I had gotten used to the idea no one would veer try and tackle it again.

If Koch got a hold of the D1 master tape made for the LD release it could result in a pretty solid DVD quality rendition of the film-and hopefully they got the 2.0 matrixed stereo and 5.1 ac3.

I've often wondered about trying to mix in LD and DVD elements to make a better looking roadshow cut but the DVD isn't that great.
