Default Theatre of Blood (1973) (Vincent Price) - Twilight Time - August 16, 2016

We will have to see if this compares at all to the Arrow edition, but a great movie fully deserving of this release.

Excellent! Been hoping this would be on Blu-ray. Saw this for the first time a few years ago when I started diving into Vincent Price movies. One of the craziest flicks I've ever seen. (Even bought the limited edition soundtrack before it went OOP.) I love every second of it.

This might be my first TT purchase. I'd hate to spend over $30 for a single film, but this is one crazy, fun ride.

Arrow have had this for ages. Might be region-locked but will be cheaper!

I have the Arrow edition but I like the film so much I'll happily buy it again if there's a slightly better transfer or different extras. Love this scene with Coral Browne who became Price's wife in 1974

Gorgeous Michael J. Lewis score for this, so the prospect of an isolated score track is enticing. I mean, I have the soundtrack CD anyways, but it's always cool to hear the music by itself as the film is playing.

I have the Arrow release. Twilight Time rarely beat Arrow for quality and extras.

Recently though, they usually at least have some exclusive stuff and port over a bunch of the same stuff (ex Hound of the Baskervilles). This is a case where Arrow just destroyed them, unfortunately for non-importers/Panasonic owners. If you REALLY like those two guys I guess I could see this being worth owning in addition. But look at this:

Quote:
Trailer - original trailer for Theatre of Blood. In English, not subtitled. (3 min).
A Harmony for Horror: An Interview with Composer Michael J. Lewis - in this video interview, composer Michael J. Lewis recalls how he was approached to score Theatre of Blood and discusses the harmonic structure of his soundtrack, as well as the manner in which the music compliments the visuals. (Note: There some encoding glitches on the video). In English, not subtitled. (18 min).
Staged Reaction: An Interview with Star Madeline Smith - in this video interview, actress Madeline Smith (Rosemary) recalls her work with Douglas Hickox on Theatre of Blood and discusses his directing methods. The actress also recalls how the old theater seen in the film was burned down. In English, not subtitled. (10 min).
A Fearful Thespian: An Interview with David Del Valle - in this video piece, film historian David Del Valle discusses Vincent Price's performance in Theatre of Blood, the rather unique cast that was gathered for the film, etc. In English, not subtitled. (11 min).
A Priceless Pot-Boiler: Victoria Price Discusses Theatre of Blood - in this video interview, Victoria Price, daughter of the great actor, discusses some of the Shakespearean roles Vincent Price played, important events from his private life, some of the reasons Theatre of Blood sill stands up, etc. In English, not subtitled. (12 min).
Commentary - audio commentary with Jeremy Dyson, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, and Reece Shearsmith. This is a light and quite entertaining commentary with plenty of hilarious anecdotes (including a rather zesty one), interesting comments about the film's production history and the careers and personal lives of select actors, Vincent Price's body of work, etc.
There's also a real booklet instead of the couple pagers TT includes. I mean, I'm glad TT does that, but the Arrow one is pretty long.

FYI, that commentary is one of my favorites. Those guys are always fantastic to listen to (they also have a track on Blood on Satan's Claw, and I think at least one other disc I have, and Mark Gatiss has hosted some wonderful horror docs recently for the BBC). Unless the TT has a different transfer, this should be a no-brainer.

The cover is cooler, though.

This is his best role by far. It's probably my favorite movie of his, too.

This movie is a must for anyone who enjoyed The Abominable Dr Phibes. They're both very similar in tone and story concept.

I love Dr Phibes, but I think this just stomps all over it. It's way more ridiculous and gruesome and Price has much more opportunity to act, both seriously and ridiculously. That scene with him as "Butch" the hairdresser is one of the greatest things he ever did. Diana Rigg really puts it over the top. The movie as a whole is much higher quality than pretty much any genre pic he did outside of maybe Masque of the Red Death or Pit and the Pendulum.

Unless you count Laura or Leave her to Heaven as a genre pic, I guess!

Ian Hendry's final line in the movie is absolutely delicious.
