Default Blu-ray Disc Profiles and LG GGW-H20L

I've been hearing lately that the older Blu-Ray players will not be able to play the new standard or Profiles of BD's. I just ordered a LG GGW-H20L internal SATA Drive that reads and writes Blu-Ray Discs. My question is will this LG GGW-H20L be able to play the new profiles at High Definition? Like Profile 2.0 ? Something about Picture-In-Picture (PIP).

1.1 is picture in picture, Bonus view i think is the name
2.0 is optional web interactivity
all players should play the film.
not sure about pc drives but i suspect software is the key rather than the drive?

This laptop's drive was recently upgraded/updated to 1.1(Bonus View) via PowerDVD Ultra.
Yes, 1.1/Bonus View adds PiP.

Pretty sure(nothing certain) that since it does have ethernet, 2.0 shouldn't be too hard.

That is just FUD. There are 1.1 profile movies out NOW & 1.0 players play them just fine. You would just be not able to play the extra bonus stuff that uses 1.1 or 2.0, the movie & most of the bonus stuff will play.

Since your getting BD-ROM it would just need an update to run 1.1 or 2.0 profile.

All players will be able to play the films. There are some special features which may not accessible on certain profiles.

As for optical drives in computers, they shoud be fully upgradeable through software to handle all profiles.

Default Blu-Ray Disc Profiles and LG GGW-H20L

I see, thanks.

I was just worried for a moment because I want my LG GGW-H20L reader/writer to be able to take full advantage of the BD Profiles. I'd like to be able to access every Blu-Ray Disc 100% including all the features and everything. If the LG GGW-H20L wouldn't be able to do this then I'd be more inclined to return the LG GGW-H20L and get a PS3 with Yellow Dog Linux and a bigger HDD.

Profile 1.0/1.1/X is handled by the software, powerdvd, and they are always releasing patches. The profile 1.1 patch was released a few weeks ago. Plus you can update the firmware easily on the LG drive so I have little doubt that it will last for a really long time

Profiles are a software issue. PowerDvD Ultra is 1.1 right now, will eventually be upgraded to 2.0 Get the Full version though, the OEM sucks.

Profile this and profile that...you are more future proof with a PC than anything - even a PS3. Changes are made via software downloads. The drive is just a drive.

It also fixed the downmix problem (last info I heard). Verified that Ratatoullie plays uncompressed audio LPCM 5.1 @ 6912Kbps!

Thanks, This is very good news then. Since I will be using my computer to play my Blu-Ray movies.

I'm guessing the thing that will make some old stand alone Blu-Ray players obselete (In terms of playing the new features, profiles etc...) will be the fact that they do not have enough memory or there is no way to upload the "patches" or profile updates. So those players won't be able to take full advantage of the newest Blu-Ray Movies that implement the newer BD Profiles.

No doubt. The OEM version only lets you use 2 channels! I hate to say, and might get in trouble, but bittorrent the full version if you have the oem. I think it's unethical to make us need to buy a $100 software upgrade after we pay $300 for the device!
