Default How Long Are Speakers Good For?

I have Powered Infinity Tower speakers from 1997 as my two front mains and an Infinity Center Channel. They produce a more mellow sound (lack of sharp Highs) as compared to other speakers.

I was just wondering how long speakers generally last before needing to replace them with average use.

Any thoughts, personal experiences, guesses or suggestions would help. Thank you!

Well if the cone are not punched and the material still not craked or any damage speaker are good as long as they can be. Technology evolve... I bought my first Tower in 1997.. just changed them for Paradigm Monitor 9 speaker last year.. won't ever go back!

That is an excellent question, but I think I have a more accurate answer. While the general condition of the speakers account for something, the life of the speaker may diminish as the internal magnets weaken. Providing that they actually do weaken.

Oxidation is the real enemy.

I have an old pair of Infinitys from the mid 80s that are still chugging along just fine. The woofer surrounds finally shredded last year but I just picked up some new ones and glued 'em in. Result: good as new.

They are good until you hear something that you must have. Once you find a new speaker that you just cant live without, then your old speakers are no good

I like the way you think. My speakers are around 5 years old and I do my best to avoid audio shops. So far the strategy has worked and I don't see the need for new speakers.

My father has a pair of DCM Time Windows from 1977 or so, they are quite nice still and they were floor demo models! The main advances since then have been in tweeters for home theater effects but for music these are still great speakers.

On really old speakers they can go in and replace the wiring and some other parts (the rear connectors, etc) which can greatly improve the sound (by improve I mean restore to its original quality)...

I had some Yamaha A770s for about 12 years sounded great until recently. Replaced them with Klipsch Quintet II speakers. But you should get a good while out of speakers compared to the rest of the components.

Decent speakers that are kept in a clean home with low humidity and at room temperature will usually last 20-30 years. At that point often the cones degenerate or other things can happen that I won't go into here. But even older speakers can be refurbished if certain parts are available. Speaker technology moves at a much slower pace than most electronics.
