it's called anamorphic widescreen. It gives you the picture in its entirety as it was filmed. 16x9 which is what your TV is will only display "full screen" when the aspect ration is somewhere between 1.6-1.9. The last samurai is probably a 2.4:1 ratio, thus your black bars. but as MOONPHASE said, completely normal.

ok, thanks guys.

is it me or is it a total waste of screen space? i guess i could use the zoom function but then the characters would seem a bit odd. are newer films using the entire screen then?

it just comes down to personal taste. The anamorphic gives you the full picture. if it filled the screen you'd lose some of the piscture on either side, just like fullscreen vs. widescreen DVD. some people cant stand it and some like it. Doesn't bother me a whole lot. sure it would be nice to utilize the entire screen for picture, but I do enjoy having the full picture how it was filmed.

movies have different aspect ratios meaning some could play in full screen, some in anamorphic widescreen, and different kinds of widescreen but however you just have to watch whatever they intended to use

no, its a great thread.

but the "why the black bars" gets right to the point and is real easy to understand. (maybe Deci'll include this link in it?)
