Default "Enhanced visual commentary" vs. picture-in-picture

I've watched parts of the "true" PiP commentary on Sunshine as well as the "enhanced visual commentary" on Shoot 'Em Up and 3:10 to Yuma. If I understand correctly, the latter does not require Profile 1.1 because it is implemented in BD-J like the pop-up menu. Is this true?

The BD-J implementation looked more slick to me than the PiP one. It seems possible to me that, given the general lack of Profile 1.1 players out there right now, studios may opt to go the BD-J route. If this becomes industry standard practice even as 1.1/2.0 players achieve deep market penetration, then 1.1 won't really be all that useful in the future.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I've been meaning to ask:
Was New Line's "Hairspray" "real" 1.1 PiP, or T3-style "fake" one?

(Judging from the fact that you couldn't switch between the two on the fly, and had to start the movie over in each case...)
