Default Question for Sony Bravia 46XBR LCD owners

When watching non-HD 4:3 aspect ratio regular tv, is there any way to change the color of the bars on the side to black instead of gray?

Mine only shows them as black...what XBR do you have? XBR2, XBR4, XBR5?

how high is your backlight up?
how high is your brightness up?
what type of setting is your HDTV in?

These things could easily make black appear to be gray.

What provider do you use? I think DirectTV has an option in the menu for this. I've also noticed some stations are different. For example, my local Fox affiliate uses gray bars for the local news.

If you use directv its in the menu settings options area. Mine were grey at first too until I found the option to change them to black. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys I didn't think that my cable provider would provide an option for the color of the bars on the side of the 4:3 image. I will have to check it out tonight. My provider is Cablevision.

It worked by changing the settings on my cablebox. Wanted to thank everyone for their help.

ATSC (over the air) shows have a variety of letterbox colors, some are grayish blue
some black, some charcoal, some navy blue.

Since its not from a cable box, theres no way to change it. Just letting you know.
