Default When will PS3 get profile 2.0 firmware

With Saw IV coming out in one week from today, and it being a disc that utilizes profile 2.0, will Sony be releasing new firmware for the PS3 within one week? I've yet to hear any news regarding this, and time is coming near for the new discs that support it. I know they were demoing this at CES using a PS3, so I know the update exists, but when will they push it out?

I believe they will wait until other manufacturers roll out their 2.0 players. Would not be fair to their supporting companies to be the only 2.0 player for months beforehand.

I am afraid not this month, if an article on a Dutch PS3 site is correct. According to them, Sony has no firmware update planned for January: http://ps3only.nl/nieuwsitem.php?nid=8944

the BD live (so 2.0 BD) was shown at CES this year running on a PS3. I guess we don't see it in the coming 2 months, but I am sure they will update the PS3 to BDlive before July this year. Hopefully they will also add ingame XMB and DTS:MA support by then...god I hope they will add those soon!

I know we get it when we get it, but what's the point of having it and not releasing it? It's not Sony's fault other manufacturers aren't making their players 2.0 compliant. There are titles coming out that support this, but we can't actually make use of it until other mfgs. decide to make their players current, that's BS. I plan on seeing Saw IV as soon as possible, and I want to utilize the BD Live, but can't because they won't let us have the firmware that they already have, because of politics? It's no wonder so many people don't want to jump on the blu ray bandwagon, why mess with something that works fine as is, when they would otherwise have to spend several hundred dollars on a player that isn't fully functional considering what it's capable of doing, but the manufacturers just don't implement the technology. There are other players that output DTS-HD MA, wether it be bitstream only, or internal decoding only... if Sony has the ability to give us internal dts-hd ma decoding now, they shouldn't have to wait for other manufacturers to play catch up before they release it.

I feel the same way, but I actually have faith in Sony. Other than the DTS-HD MA thing, Sony has been pretty proactive to release firmware a day or two before the title hits the shelves. Just take a look at Resident Evil 3 and the BD 1.1 (bonus view) firmware update. Hang tight. From what I've seen, nobody really knows when Sony will be releasing a new firmware update. Everything on the net is all speculation.

i assume "profile 2.0" firmware is different than "firmware update v2.10" that i installed a couple days ago

edit: just read that "update v2.10" is "profile 1.1" so much to learn

Default firmware 2.20

I think they will release a new firmware next month and will include one of the two following BD Profile 2.0 or in game XMB and then the next month they will add the other what do you think?

It will probably be like the 1.1 Profile update. It was released a couple of weeks before Sony's first 1.1 (PIP) Blu-ray disc. I look for them to follow that same schedule.

I'm more antsy about getting the DTS-HD MA update.

A little late for that since Saw IV comes out in one week.

I can understand Sony wanting to wait for some of the other companies to catch up, but if they didn't wait, these other companies may be quicker on their releases.

Saw IV is not a Sony title. It's Lionsgate. I'm sure they have informed the studios of their 2.0 update timeline for the PS3. If the studios want to preempt 2.0 capable players, I'm sure there is nothing holding them back from doing so.

Me too, I'm not really all that interested in the profile 2.0 stuff, but I still want the update just so I can check it out as soon as I rent Saw IV.

Sony will release profile 2.0 to the PS3 when they are certain it is operating correctly, just as they do with other firmware releases. I've heard Sony publicly state a couple of times that they were considering reducing the number of firmware releases they have a year, so it is easier to manage internally.

Perhaps 2.0 will be released with in-game XMB and DTS HD Master in one huge upgrade?

Agreed. It's not as if everyone who buys Saw IV will be buying it in its first week of release (altho, ya know, MOST probably will).

We should applaud Lionsgate on being first out of the... err... gate... with a 2.0 disc. (No pun intended.)

ha, you know what they say. Don't put all your eggs in one basket... We will get at most 2 of those at the same time, but I think DTS HDMA will be the last to be added, as most companies want Sony to wait for them to catch up.

Of course, 3 mil of the 3.5 mil bd players in the US are ps3's, so they have a lot of catching up to do. Let's hope they don't wait to long...
