Now here is an interesting question which maybe someone out there can answer. If Sony were to announce the rumored 40 GB PS3 for $399.99, and they do so after October 31st, since this will be a new SKU and probably a new model number, will this apply to the new mandatory profile 1.1 rules?
Just a thought... |

Well.. I would say that IF sony release a firmware update that makes the current PS3 models 1.1 compliant on or prior to the October 31 deadline, then all future models released after October 31st would be 1.1 compliant, because they would be running the current firmware.

IF it comes out at all and is beyond 10/31 then it has to be profile 1.1 compatible. It is mandated by the BDA that ANY players released beyond that date have to be profile 1.1 compatible. That would include a new PS3 design as well.

The jump from 1.1 to 2.0 seems so small, they should have called them 2.0 and 2.1.
![]() In other words IF the PS3 is capable of 2.0 I don't see any reason why it wouldn't jump straight to that, except if Sony is being nice to the other CE companies letting them come out with a 2.0 player first... |

The criteria for Profile 1.1 is simply: a) secondary video decoding; b) secondary audio decoding; c) minimum 256MB persistent memory (the PS3 has 20GB at least.)
For Profile 2.0, it needs: a) network connectivity via an ethernet port at least; b) minimum 1GB persistent memory. So for the PS3, all the firmware needs to do is enable the Cell to do secondary video and audio decoding and the PS3 becomes a Profile 2.0 BD player. fuad |

Forgive my ignorance, but when you say "secondary audio decoding", what exactly are you referring to? |

What people forget is that the PS3 is a software based player.
Not any different that having a bluray drive in your PC. Everything is emulated by the cell. So logic would tell you that the other profile's features will just be written to it as well. |

The PS3 should in theory be able to do 7 picture-in-picture streams. When the PS3 was first announced they showed something like 8 1080p streams going at once running off of the predev kits.
So I have no doubt that the PS3 will be updated to a fully 2.0 compliant BD player. The only question is when. |
