this was asked in another site. i cannot figure the answer to this. i have a ps3 and an onkyo 705. i can matrix the sound from dvd and blu to 7.1 but i cannot matrix the sound from movies streaming from my computer or playing on the ps3 hard drive. even if the video has dd 5.1 encoded in it, i cannot matrix it to 7.1. i also tried a ps3 game and was unable to matrix it to 7.1.
i dont think it matters wether im bitstreaming or using lpcm because either way with dvd i can matrix the sound. can anyone fill me in on this? thanks added: also on 2channel divix sources i can select an option on my receiver for 5.1 matrix but the sound will not come out. i just get a faint hiss out of the rear speakers. I've wondered this as well. I've tried to figure out how to get the music stored on the hard drive to play throughout my other speakers, but I haven't been able to do that yet. Any help would be appreciated.

this has been a long standing issue with the PS3...for as long as I can remember, two channel audio would not be matrixed as you speak of. But I do recall somone figuring out that if you un-check 5.1pcm and 7.1pcm, leaving only 2.0pcm...that it will finally matrix? (give it a try)
im at work, maybe i can dig up where I remember seeing this? |

ok, i was able to get 7.1 with a game but this involves messing with the audio options. i had to uncheck everything except 5.1 dd and dts. that i suppose bitstreamed the audio for the receiver to take care of and i was able to matrix the sound.
if i am able to matrix lpcm from a blu ray, then why not from a game? or any other format i play lpcm? this kinda sucks because i dont want to have to switch the settings for this all the time. i already switch when i use either hdmi or component for any given situation but now i have to do it for individual formats now? IIRC the other option would be to run an optical cable, but there are other annoyances that come with this... having to change settings on the PS3 to listen to music (if you want access to the onbaord matrixing)....

wow, i was unaware that this was an ongoing issue. got the movie on the hdd to matrix the 5.1dd by doing the same. but still, if i can matrix pcm from a movie (and i just tried again with chicken little) then it stands to reason that i should be able to with at least the games.
