Default When did you buy your first DVD player?

I believe I was a late bloomer, but I think my first official DVD player was my PS2.

I got mine in 2001, I believe. It's a Pioneer karaoke three-disc changer.

PS2, Christmas of 2001, Sophomore Year in High School - not technically bought, but owned.

Had a Toshiba Presario desktop though that I remember as having a DVD player - think the family bought that one in the summer of 2001. First DVD we owned? Top Gun!

1998? Maybe 2000? I remember I was an early adopter because I wanted all my anime on DVD instead of VHS.

I got mine not long before the PS2 was launched. Studios were in the habit at that time of only releasing some titles for sale on DVD while you could only rent the VHS version. I desperately wanted Deep Blue Sea and I took the plunge to own that movie. I paid $200 for it at Blockbuster. Then I replaced that player (which still works and is currently used by my great Aunt) with my PS2.

I bought mine in 2000? It was for $279 bucks (open box buy from Circuit City which I still have the DVD player and still works great today) My first DVD I bought to go with it was Gladiator since it just came. Paid $35 bucks for it.

I bought mine in 1997 as well..... easy to remember, because I got it as a "Gift" for myself for my H.S. Graduation that year and took it to college. I think it was closer to $1,000 but I'm not sure.....

P.S. It's a Toshiba, and it STILL works. I purchased several since then, because they came out with so many players that were a LOT better, but I gotta give the thing some credit! I should look at it, and find out what model it is..... I bet I can't find much info on the web about it.....

I was a very early adpoter. I think I bought my player the day it was released. It was $600 at American Appliance.....no longer in business. I only had a 32" Sony Triniton TV and and old Kenwood Receiver. It all went down hill from there. Dolby Digital receivers weren't even out yet. I had to buy a Harmon Kardon AC-3 decoder and 2 seperate Kenwood KM-X1000 amps, just to enjoy the DD sound. Well worth it though. I had the same gear for the next 5 years. I still have the same NHT Speakers though.

$200 on a major clearance deal. If I remember right, it was originally over $600. It was a Pro-Scan DIVX model (which worked fine with 'standard' DVDs - never used DIVX).

LOL....I forgot about DIVX.....Yeah, I wasted money on one of those too. At the time it sounded like a good idea

What a waste of money that was.

GoVideo DVD/ VCR combo in 2003. Got the employee discount at Radio Shack making it much more affordable. Bought a second one not too long afterwards.

Sold both to a work friend as they are replaced with a BD player, and Panasonic DVD recorder / VHS with digital tuner.

I think the reason mine was such a good deal at the time is DIVX was on the way out. That was fine with me - I just wanted it for 'regular' DVDs anyway.

I think I bought my first DVD player 2 years after DVD first made its debut. My first DVD player was one of the top of the line SONY DVD players at the time of which I remember it cost me around $400-500. Interestingly enough, DVD players were like only around $200 the following year. I was pissed.

I bought the PS2 on launch day and bought a standalone DVD player...it was either late second gen or early third gen hardware.

Whenever that first DVD of The Rock had come out was about the time I did it.
