issue with screen flashing

im trying to help a friend who has a 4 yr old zenith c27v36 hdtv. it has several inputs 2 component and 1 dvi. resolutions are up to and including 1080i. i recently hooked up my ps3 AND a progressive scan dvd player via dvi AND component. the picture kept flashing and wouldnt stay. the ps3 would only show via dvi when set at 480i. he received this tv free with no known issues. i tried all the adjustments in the tv's menu but nothing seems to work. maybe theres something im missing but i just dont understand why a pic will display at 480i and not 480p and higher. some sort of hd chip busted?

HDCP issues, he needs a new tv if he wants to use HDMI

component does the same thing. and it is hdcp compliant. this is why im confused

Well looks like time for a new tv. 2 devices will not work right & on diffrent ports, something is broken on the tv. Tv is not worth fixing at 4 years, 1080i max & just 27".

Does ANYTHING display on the tv with out flashing??? cable/satellite tv or the menus

all other inputs work fine. only dvi and component doesnt like anything 480p and above, they just flash. you can see the pic for a split second and the resolution looks ok from what i can see but the pic doesnt stay.

the tv menu comes on wether the pic is there or not, but when the first flash happens, the menu disappears until the menu button is again pressed.
