Default UPS driver fired for not delivering weed

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/photos/...s%2F2422237%2F

Quote:
Former United Parcel Service driver Steven Mojica is suing the delivery company after he claims he was fired for not delivering a suspicious package that turned out to be marijuana, according to a Detroit Newsstory.

Mojica claims that a supervisor told him "he should have delivered the package, even if it contained illicit drugs."

Mojica, 41, had a next-day package from Arizona on July 29 to deliver in Pontiac, Mich. He held on to the four-pound package, which his supervisors considered theft and reported it to the DEA for suspected drug dealing, and fired him, according to his attorney, Mark Porter.

"It's nice to know UPS can guarantee delivery to drug dealers and fire employees that refuse to deliver their drugs," Porter told the Detroit News.

A UPS driver for 17 years, Mojica was worried he was in harm's way so he returned the package to his truck, according to the suit.

After being told by a supervisor to deliver it, even if it was illegal drugs, Mojica opened it and found what he thought was marijuana.
Wow. Another reason to hate UPS lol Also who the hell would send 4 LBS of weed via UPS. I mean really..

He probably wanted him to deliver it so the DEA would be able to charge the person receiving it. That way the tracking would show that it was delivered and they could go after the sender and receiver.

I guess it's a principal matter, what if it didn't turn out to be marijuana?
He would have been fired anyway.

I guess I agree with the firing.

- He didn't deliver the package. Not doing your job may get your fired.
- If he doesn't feel safe at the delivery location, then he needs to give the package to his supervisor. He could still be fired because he isn't doing what they pay him to do, deliver packages.
- He opened the package. Yeah, that should get any delivery driver fired.

The contents of the package in this case don't really matter to me and has no bearing on him losing his job. The safety issue may come into play, but UPS drivers aren't being used as live targets even in wonderful Detroit.

UPS had a guy on their payroll that wasn't delivering packages, and even opened one of them. They had to cut him to make room for the guy that would just drop off the dang boxes like the company pays him to do.

I wonder if a signature was required. Usually when one isn't UPS will just leave it near my door.

There was a similar situation that occurred in Sheboygan recently. It was in the Press today, and my local radio station loves making fun of Sheboygan folks:

http://www.sheboyganpress.com/articl...0101/311040071

Quote:
A 21-year-old Sheboygan man was charged Monday after picking up a one-pound package of marijuana buds sent to him through FedEx, according to a criminal complaint.

The package had drawn the company’s suspicions when the delivery address turned out to be an abandoned home. FedEx then informed police of the package, and Vincent M. Bier was arrested when he tried to pick it up Friday.

Bier, of 1416 N. 15th St., could face up to three years in prison on a charge of marijuana possession with intent to deliver.

According to the complaint:

Sheboygan police had a drug dog sniff the 14-by-14-inch package after FedEx reported it as suspicious, and the dog indicated there were drugs inside. Police then obtained a search warrant and had FedEx arrange for the package to be picked up by a person who called to check on its status.

Bier’s car was pulled over after the pickup, and police searched the package and found a pound of marijuana buds, valued at about $4,000. Bier had $3,922 in cash in his possession, and the dog indicated the cash had trace amounts of illegal drugs on it.

I depends on the crime rate for the zipcode and driver preference.

In Detroit I would assume a signature would be required rather than leaving a package on the front door.

4 lbs no one i know, on the other hand an old friend of mine was getting 40lb shipments through fedex or UPS for quite sometime apparently, of course one of those shipments turned out to be an intercepted package with a ton of cops waiting for him to accept before showing up minutes later but he had been it a for a while as far as i know. I gotta a feeling this is in no way an isolated thing.

MITCH HEDBERG QOUTE: I love my fed-ex guy cause he's a drug dealer and he don't even know it...and he's always on time.

I pretty much agree with this, so I won't elaborate my stance further.

I will say, though, that what the guy should have done from the beginning if he suspected it was drugs is to just report the package right away — before he delivered it. I'm sure there are a ton of details that are being left out, and my knowledge of how to deliver a package notwithstanding, there are probably plenty of reasons why he didn't do things differently.

I'm surprised at how many people are siding against the UPS driver.

He doesn't get paid to deliver drugs. If he noticed a squishy package that reeked of marijuana, I don't blame him for not wanting to deliver it.

I'm only surprised he didn't drop it off at a police station, and instead opened it himself. That, I think, is his only fault.

The fact that his supervisor seemed adamant about him delivering the package makes me wonder if his supervisor was in on it.

What else is required of UPS drivers?

Do they have to deliver murder weapons?

Dead bodies?

What if the driver realized a package was a bomb, and threw it off a cliff and it blew up? Should he be blamed for not making sure it was at the target's house before it blew up?

I think people that are against the driver are against him because they're for marijuana, and don't see delivering it as a big deal. But last I checked it's still illegal, and I don't fault the guy for not wanting to be a link of the drug trafficking chain.

I'm in no way for marijuana, but I am for him getting fired. Why? Because he opened the package. If he thought it was suspicious, he could have delivered it to police and let them deal with. Instead, he opened it himself. What if it hadn't been drugs, would he have just resealed it and pretended like nothing happened?

Had he not opened the package, I would be right there with you.

I said before that I am for his firing, and the contents of the package have nothing to do with it.

I don't care if its weed, a human head, or my order of Blus from Amazon....the delivery driver should NEVER be the person that decides to keep or open the package.
