Default Has Blu-ray quality already been maxed out??

I was thinking about this the other day. With DVD, there was quite a noticable increase in picture and sound quality over the years as the format matured and compression got better and better. However with blu ray, after seeing movies like I-Robot, Cars, Ratatoullie, Apocalypto, and the POTC films, I cannot possibly imagine PQ and AQ getting all that much better! It's kind of a bummer seeing as how blu ray is still in it's infancy.

There is no telling or not if new Compression methods come out for highdefinition content. More than likely though there will be revisions to the mpeg-4 AVC codec with visual improvements over time. There may even be a whole new codec in years to come that allows for higher PQ and less compression.

I see what you mean though...not all studios are maxing out the potential. WB for one is still using HD-DUD ports.

You will see big jumps in picture quality over the next several years, but not because of compression technology. Cameras and post production techniques will improve significantly as digital cinema takes hold. When films are not shot well today, it really shows up in HD. The industry is going to have to respond to this.

DVD Peak was in 2002 ... after that it gone to new lower level each year. Now most transfert are overscompressed and 90% of studio use heavy EE on all their title..

I know they'll definitely get EVEN better just like everything else. I know Its hard to imagine 'after' seeing "No Country For Old Men" they could improve much more (PQ WOW) & (AQ WOW) and 5.1 PCM 24bit !!! I want every BD to be of this caliber!

Yeah for me, the LOTR: Dirctor's Cut trilogy and Star Wars: Episode 3 were about the peak of dvd quality. Those along with the later pixar stuff (Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Toy Story re-release) are about the best in my collection.

It's just that blu ray is such a huge leap in quality, I can't see certain movies looking much better within the limitation of 1080p display. Now there are some blu ray releases that are sub par and need to be re-re-mastered but the tier 0 blu rays, I don't see how they can look much better.

I don't see the point of this thead. Its like saying "I want my brand new car to drive like crap now, but after 25000 miles I want it to be perfect".

Most people would take the BEST now. I for one don't see any difference coming along any time soon. 1080p is more than enough to get crystal clear images and I believe the display technology will improve much more than the PQ on discs. Thats just my 2c.

I expect there would be PQ improvements to some technical steps such as movie transfers, hence we would more consistently see highest quality BD in the future. However, there are some very high quality movie transfers and original HD material delivering finest quality picture and these cases it is hard to imagine how they could be improved even further.

Also, the screen size and seating position need to be appropriate to appreciate the quality gain, if there is any. If you watch on 106cm display you may not see much improvement although the material has significantly improved.

Seems to me DVD is getting better all of the time. I have seen some recent DVDs that look much better than any DVD I own from years before. Especially if I compare DVDs from 2002 to now .. huge difference.

I expect Blu-ray will follow suite. Encodings will get better.. but companies will also spend more time cleaning up titles after they get "re-released" and first release titles down the road will look better. When DVD first came out everyone thought it was amazing and it's quality has increased leaps and bounds over 10 years.

DVD is getting better because there were technology barriers to fully utilise the capability of DVDs. For example, when a movie is transferred to DVd, in some cases, the best available technology was not used. The reasons could be the budget, lack of technical know-how of the makers or simply the best equipment was not available. When these technical issues are worked out DVD quality got increased.

In case of blu-ray, I expect, largely it would be the same. However, in some cases, blu-ray quality is extremely good, especially where the latest equipment is used to transfer the latest movies. It is hard to imaging, how quality of such cases could be further improved.
