Why Blu-ray will be the next DVD

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/03...-the-next-dvd/

Quote:
Many give consumers too much credit, and even worse are ignoring the facts. Blu-ray has the best chance to replace DVD, and we're going to tell you why
Quote:
But wait, what about DVD-A, SACD?
Yeah, what about 'em? The success of HDTVs are proof that picture quality is more important than audio quality.

And then you get a polar opposite reaction from a moron like this one below.

My favorite quote:

There are just far more people with a nice HDTV, but a super cheap HTIB -- or use the speakers in the TV -- than there are without a TV and a set of $5,000 speakers. Seriously, most people actually believe Bose is "the most respected name in sound."

This article is really not to be taken seriously.
Why would they let an anti-tech Granny write a piece about an emerging new hight tech mass media tech is beyond me

DVD-A and SACD didn't take off because most people listened to music in their car and if your car didn't have a CD player cost at least $300 to install one but then for it to support DVD-A and SACD it would be probably twice that if not more. And now most music is listened on a portable device so you can listen to it anywhere and you are only using headphones so no benefit.

For Blu-ray probably at least 80% of the time people watch a movie on their main TV which is usually the biggest tv in the house.

The article is on target for the most part.

However, very very few people really understand just why SACD and DVD-A never got popular: the freaking music industry never supported those formats properly with NEW, POPULAR music. THAT is why SACD and DVD-A have failed. It has NOTHING to do with how customers value audio quality. And it certainly does not work as an analogy for various topics concerning Blu-ray.

How is anyone going to get excited about SACD or DVD-A if nearly all the new music for those formats is classical music and jazz albums? Want some rock music? Well, you're basically stuck with a lot of 30 year old re-masterings of classic rock albums. Throw in a few other titles with limited appeal, such as The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. I'm a big Nine Inch Nails fan, but I'll certainly agree with anyone that says Trent Reznor's music isn't going to appeal to everyone.

If music acts like Britney Spears, Kid Rock, Toby Keith, Snoop Dogg and various others who sell many millions of records had recorded their albums with formats like SACD and DVD-A in mind, then those next-gen music disc formats would definitely have been popular.

In the end, it's all about the quality of titles available to any given format. That's one of the main reasons why Blu-ray beat HD-DVD. It had a better selection of movies exclusive to its format.

Here's one funny thing. SACD and DVD-A aren't completely dead formats. They could still be popular if popular music acts would bother utilizing the capability. Unfortunately very few cutting edge bands are interested in high resolution surround sound audio. Nine Inch Nails. The Flaming Lips. Maybe a couple others. That's about it.

Everyone else in popular music is engineering their tracks to sound like crap regardless of the device playing it. Wave forms all clipped to garbage so the track is loud in some idiot's iPod and so he can't tell the difference between his AAC track and a store bought CD. Garbage! Very few things should be clipping wave forms in music, such as a British style tube amp head on a stack style guitar amplifier.

Loved the Article! I agree with most all of it. The more people get a HDTV in their home the more will start buying Blu-Ray. The Players will keep on coming down in price and it will eventually just phase out the DVD market.

Keep in mind the demise deadline of February 17th, 2009 when analog broadcasting ceases. This summer and fall will be a large push on HDTV's, and many will make the investment and purchase a HDTV. So, it will be almost natural to consider a Blu-ray Disc Player, and if the manufacturers of HDTV's are smart - they will offer a combo package that includes a Blu-ray with their HDTV. Now that would be a smart move !!! [Jim]

I'm guilty of using Toslink, despite owning a 7.1 HT. Part of it was be being dumb and not realizing that having an HDMI input connection on my receiver didn't necessarily mean I was getting HDMI input (passthrough only). Part of it is Sony sucking with the outputs on the PS3. Turns out after blowing my savings on the TV I didn't have much left for a higher-end audio receiver.

Oh well, just means I'll go buy a dedicated BD player with analog out when prices come down

I enjoyed the article, but they're basically saying it will be the next DVD because consumers are stupid. While I agree with that to a certain extent, I don't believe it to be the only reason.

My dad however, has already given up on physical media. He works with computers, but he never really cared for new technology. It took him until 2001 to get his first DVD player and I think he's only owned two of them. My parents seem to be completely happy with On Demand...and they still have a hard time deciding whether or not to pay the extra dollar for HD. They seem hopeless.

I'm guilty of using optical as well, but I did it on purpose. I'll buy a HDMI reciever that does all the new HD codecs when the recievers are a bit more common. The only reasonable one you can actually buy right now is the Onkyo 605 and above.

I am way more of a video buff anyways, and video doesn't cause the wife/gf to cry about turning it down.

you're saying you do have HDMI on your receiver? does it only passthrugh video or something? b/c if you have HDMI you should be able to use it with the PS3 for lossless audio (minus DTS MA).
