Blu-ray = HD DVD???????

I am really annoyed and bemused that blu ray is being referred to as high definition dvd. I keep hearing and reading about high definition dvd in reference to blu ray. How interesting that the name of the defunct format may become the way people refer to blu ray. Is that how the HD DVD camp plan on winning the format war after it is over? LOL ROFL

So you want to create a post just to bash HD DVD ? No point in beating or comparing a dead horse. Many people still aren't aware that Blu-ray brings pristine picture and sound in High definition. Instead of cribbing let's try to educate the masses.

It has multiple means now, is all.

Digital Video Disc is typically the reference in regards to dvd movies.

While Digital Versatile Disc does mean the disc itself [and is usually when you're talking about DVD-ROMs or DVD-Audio, because Digital Video Disc-Audio is a bit silly ].

i was at best buy yesterday lookin at he blu's (next to those damn hd duds) and i heard some saying about the hd duds, "aren't they over?" and the other person said "no, i think they're still going"

Currently, blu-ray is the best high-def format until something else beats it sometime in the future. Every format will get old and something newer will come along and take its place. That's just the way it is.

Maybe that's one reason that contributed to why HD-DVD lost the war to Blu-ray. One could make a good argument that the term "DVD" is pretty generic and that translates to "HD-DVD" being generic.

There's nothing generic at all about "Blu-ray Disc." It's a real brand name. I think it was good thinking for Sony, Panasonic and the others involved in that format to come up with something specific rather than something tied to a previous format or "HD" or any numerical stuff relating to 1080p or 720p.

This is my point really, hd dvd may become the generic term. It is just kind of funny that hd dvd may win the war on what to call the new format. Kind of like coke being used to describe other drinks. Or xerox for copying. Really I am just a little bemused by the situation especially after how heated the format war was. Some people I could see getting upset over the mere use of hd dvd being used to talk about blu ray. I for one don't care, after all, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

HD DVD was originally called AOD and then they changed the name to HD DVD when Toshiba and MS convinced the DVD forum that they would be ready to go before BD. The DVD forum felt that the name HD DVD would help with the progression from DVD to HD being that it's similar and it''s very logical. If the DVD forum would have gone with BD from the beginning it may have very well been called HD DVD.
