yes. The onkyo 605 fits the needs of someone looking to jumping into a home theater system but doesn't want to throw too large a chunk down ($400 is retail for it now I think). It has 2 hdmi ports, one for your hd receiver (sat or cable) and one for your ps3 (or whathaveyou). It can bitstream True HD and DTS HDMA. That doesn't matter if you have a ps3 because it can decode PCM and True HD over HDMI (both audio and video). The one thing it can't do as of now (but Sony is working on it) is internally decode DTS HDMA (which is what FOX uses). It only decodes the core which is okay, but not great. Hope this helps.

thanks a lot for your help.

this year i'm kind of tight. maybe just $1000

i almost got the HT-PS904 cause it was less but then i read this
"HDMI switching capable (2 in, 1 out) with 1080p video pass through — separate audio connection required"

which scared me off.

------

so now i'm thinking HT-PS908..(that comes with a 605).BUT
i dont need a DVD player with it.= since i have my PS3.
so should i get it anyways since it comes with speakers?

the 605 alone does look good for $400!!!
the problem with that is, I know ZERO about speakers
if i buy the 605 separately which 7.1 should i get?

is $600 enough for 7.1 speakers?!

HELP!!

Didn't somebody else gave you advice about this? Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Speakers at Amazon US$250.

If you don't have a large room or a dedicated room for home theater, 7.1 can be overkill. But if you want to build a 7.1, don't buy satellite systems. Go with bookshelves/subs or floorstanding/subs.

I think it's a mistake, but HDMI doesn't guarantee anything appart from VGA video plus PAL or NTSC. In practice you get more than that, but the functionality is determined by what the manufacturer has specified. This applies to all versions of HDMI.
