Default Toshiba: Awww...that HD-DVD thing? We were just looking for something to do.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1204...j_todays_paper

I love this guy. Again with the, "We dumped a few hundred million, thousands of man hours and two years of effort into something that wasn't important to us anyway."

PCs are the future...yeah...yeah...and ummmmm...upconverting. That's the same as hi-def. We just wanted to see what'd happen with those red...disc...things. What are they again??? They were so unimportant to the company I forgot already.

I was with him up until the point where he was saying that they're going to improve their upconversion so that people can't tell the difference between HD DVD (and assuming he's including Blu-ray as well) and regular DVD's. What a bonehead statement.

What a complete and utter moron. Of course, now that HD-DVD is in the trash where it belongs, "it was nothing". But it such a huge thing before, and the "best value for the consumer". Whatever.

I know what he's talking about. It's the same sort of upconversion NASA does with their astronomical photographs. I'm sure it'll work out because upconverting a motion picture in that way is exactly the same as a basically static photograph.

And, if it were, that'd beg the question why we were bothering to use things like Hubble...or planning a replacement for it. If upcoverted's the same, then it's the same

Embarassingly ignorant and delusional. I can't believe that their CEO, of all people, is really falling back on that wretched ignorance of 'perfecting' standard upconversion to make it as good as real HD. It simply cannot be done.

I really have come to have antipathy for this company and this is a perfect example of why.

may i, as a purple guy with more HD DVDs than Blu's, say

a, that i am disappointed in the b.s. statements about "upconverting"
b, that i find it very odd, that they don't seem to want to get into Blu-ray now
c, i do not like the "what do we care, was a profit center for us" attitude

almost makes me regret having supported the format by being purple through the war times.

Trying to squeeze as much life out of a format they still get royalties from. I wouldn't be surprised if MS tries to buy them outright as their hardware wing.

a. I really would be offended. "Buy this." Then, "Well, that stuff we talked you into? It really was pretty much crap. Upconversion is fine. In fact, we never cared about HD-DVD anyway. Sucker."

There really are way better ways to express disappointment and hope for your company's future without crapping all over the people that invested in your product.

b. Temporary sour grapes. They're no doubt waiting to see if BD can gain ground. Rest assured, they won't be left out in the cold if there's money to be made.

PCs? Are they for real? They have less than 9% market share in notebooks, let alone set-top PCs. And they were the manufacturer with the smallest year-on-year growth:
http://displaysearch.com/cps/rde/xch...t_03042008.asp

What will they do when HP, Acer and Dell laptops ship with Blu-ray drives?

May as well make it offical vs. the unoffical proxy it's been anyways.

It really is high time for HD-DVD supporters to get past the Sony and BD hate and start directing some of the ire justifiably toward the sources that misled them in the first place: Toshiba and Microsoft.

Proxy? Whatever do you mean?

The way posters at AVSForums are spinning it is that Toshiba realized there was no money in HDM due to either the small amount of people with HDTVs... or the small amount of difference in PQ... but that SUC players will interest people a LOT more?

I also love the thinking that just because someone has a large collection of movies on DVD, they're somehow being forced to rebuy them on Blu-ray if they buy a Blu-ray title. I mean, seriously, there are quite a few films that I have on DVD which I have absolutely no intention of double-dipping on for Blu-ray. Only my favorites or the occasional title that gets good PQ results that will tempt me too much.

I also love the guy who stated that Toshiba sold out of all their $99 HD DVD players within minutes... maybe some places, but not everywhere...

I still do not understand how an AV "SCIENCE" site (and other forums) are full of people who keep looking for ways for lesser quality AV options to come out on top!!

It's really not full of people....it's about a dozen bitter-enders and another couple of dozen strap-hangers who make all the fuss. A better question is why AVS permits the discussion in a forum dedicated to High Definition.

The DUD boys at AVS who are now clamouring to this ridiculous "SUC" idea are incredibly foolish - I mean the way they fell hook, line, and sinker for HD DVD proves it anyway. They really deserve what happened to them in this format war. When you refuse to face reality and basic facts - when you choose to remain totally blind, you get what's coming to you.

Indeed. The illogic gives me a headache. HD PQ doesn't matter to J6P. You're lucky if he has an HDTV to begin with, but he's going to rush to SUC? But you just basically said HD is irrelevant and meaningless to him. If that's true he's going to be perfectly happy with his $40 Orion player from Wally World and all your HD products are pointless to him.

In order to be attracted to what you've got, HD has to matter to him. If it does he's sure as hell not going to be satisfied entirely with the streched and fuzzed out SUC video.

Completely agree on upgrading the collection. I've upgraded select titles and will continue to do so, but some titles just aren't going to be upgraded. DVD really is good enough. The whole idea that people are just going to sigh and trudge to the store and rebuy every single title they have out of some sense of, what.....obligation? is just silly.
