Default Question about my TV set and switching to Blu-ray.

Hello. This is my first post here. I'm heavily considering switching to Blu-ray. Many releases are coming out that I'd much rather see in their highest quality. Since this is clearly where many experience Blu-Ray owners can be found, I wanted opinions from people who would know best.

With a TV like this:

Is it worth the switch? I've had the TV for a while, and have been running an unconvert player with my 400+ DVDs, and I was just wondering if the switch was a smart way to go with a TV that only reaches 720p.

I have the money ready, and I'm planning on getting a PS3...but I wanted some opinions first. Thank you, much appreciated.

this is the TV I got myself for Xmas, I'm 1000% happy for it, image/color/contrast quality is incredible, and it's good for a mid size living room (mine is 13ft/4m x 18ft/6m)
found it for 700 Euros around Xmas so maybe you can find it cheaper than the link somewhere

Short answer is yes, for several reasons:

All the upscaling in the world can't make a standard 480p picture higher resolution. The artifacts introduced to compress the image are essentially magnified during the upconversion process. It's the garbage in-garbage out analogy.

Now, you're running a relatively small TV at 720p, which means you won't take full advantage of the resolution encoded by Blu-ray movies, but you should still be able to notice a clearer, sharper picture. The difference won't be as drastic as if you were comparing DVD to Blu on a 52" 1080p TV.

Even if its only a modest increase in picture quality, what are the odds you will upgrade your TV in the next 10 years? If and when you do, your Blu library will be ready and waiting.

Lastly, it's not just about the picture. Blu-ray offers better quality audio tracks. HD audio to match your HD video... and that's something that no upconverter can touch.

I made the switch...and it's an INCREDIBLE difference. Thanks all for helping me out. PS3 works like a dream, and I bought "The Shining", "A Clockwork Orange", and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" as my first titles. I don't think I'll ever buy a DVD again...unless there's no Blu-ray release.

Amazing.

Thanks again, everyone.
