So if I watch a stereo video and use an audio setting to take better advantage of the audio with my 7.1 setup and switch to another video that has at least 5.1 sound, will the audio setting automatically switch to take advantage of the different audio codec?

Actually, when watching an HD station, my receiver flips back and forth during commercials from Dolby Digital to whatever preset I have it at (usually one of the surround sound listening modes). So I think the answer might actually be yes. It detects what input is coming in- I think you can possibly set this up under the preferences in the GUI, though it's been awhile since I've gone in there.

I'm talking about PS3 where it doesn't show which codec it uses so how do I make sure that it's switched back to PCM pass-through when I switch from watching normal video to a movie with Dolby True HD?

No I mean the receiver itself. When I watch stereo videos I uses different audio settings to take better advantage from my speakers. Does it automatically switch the settings when I watch BR or playing a game that uses surround sound and not just stereo?

-.-........................for example I use Nero Cinema to watch a stereo video. If I watch a video with at least 5.1 surround (like BR) will it automatically switch natively to the right codec, or will it still play it in Nero Cinema mode?

with the ps3 you only have two options. multichannel or direct. use multichannel. it should automatically change. there's settings for that, preset listening modes for different sources.
