Default Is the Drive in the BDP-S1 a blu ray burner?

Hey, I was just reading through a thread which someone said the Drive inside the BDP-S1 could be used as a blu ray burner if you take the drive and put it inside your PC.

Is this true? I dont want to take the BDP-S1 apart.... unless I have some verification.

I did a search and didnt come up with much.

I cannot confirm, but I also recall a posting from when the S1 was first released stating that it actually had a BD burner inside. However, even if this was correct it doesn't mean that Sony didn't change to a BD-ROM drive in later production units. I suspect the only way to be sure it to open your specific S1 and check the model number on the BD drive.

Yes, the Sony BDP-S1 and the Pioneer Elite BDP-HD1 both use a Pioneer BDR-101A BD burner as their drive. The drive can write single layer BD-R/RE discs at 2x and DVD+/-Rs at 8x. It cannot read or write CD media.

You'd likely need to get a new faceplate to have it look right in a PC... but the drive should work fine.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone actually used it in a PC? I wonder if Sony has did some sort of firmware lock no the drive.

That I don't know... but it seems like some people mentioned last year that they had done that with their BDP-S1 drive (perhaps it was over at AVCForum???), so I'm assuming it wasn't all the difficult.

I believe it just has the standard EIDE connector... and if the firmaware is a problem, then flashing the drive with the latest firmware for the PC wold likely take care of it.

That said, it's an awfully nice and expensive piece of equipment to be scrapping for parts, though, so I would be pretty hesitant to do it.

The players only cost me $147/$147/$142 and $120. So they were not too expensive to me.

Yes.

Circuit city was also clearing these and the panny DMP-BD10AK

I picked up a panny for one of my friends for $160. Dang that unit is a lot faster than the sony. A LOT faster.
