I'm currently using a Marantz-SR7002 as a pre-amp, and it is nothing short of wonderful. I'm not a receiver kind of guy, I prefer seperates, so me endorsing a receiver is saying a lot.

Marantz has always been a high end company. Its ownership has changed many times over the years. However, it is now part of Denon-Marantz company. Here is a little history:

Marantz used to sell receiver that you could consider high-end, the SR-18, but no longer offer it. Their current lineup would be low to mid end.

Not audiophile type high end, but still above average. Marantz has some very nice products which will surely make you happy.

They are definitely considered audiophile type highend as far as receivers go. Marantz makes some of the best receivers in the world. Unless you plan on spending many thousands for a company like rotel, anthem, etc they are definitely considered audiophile grade for receivers.

As far as good clean sound goes, Marantz and Rotel are two of the best..... I love my Marantz 7001

Audiophile type equipment IS the type of equipment that costs many thousands of dollars. I'm saying Marantz is high end regular consumer level product. (Ie in a different league then Rotel, etc). It's in competition more with brands like Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon, etc.

That's more what I meant.

High end receiver is an oxymoron. Sure Marantz makes some of the best receivers out there, I own one myself and use it as a pre-amp since I have a 5 channel Rotel Amplifier. It does it's duty for HT and music, wonderfully and is a great bang for the buck, but it isn't high end, well the receiver that is. Marantz has their higher end seperates and reference SACD players. In fact, the high end isn't shopping for receivers period. High end is shopping for seperates from brands like Bel Canto, Krell, McIntosh, Classe, Mark Levenson, Conrad Johnson just to name a few. Marantz is in the middle, between the high end and the J6P products from Integra, Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer etc.

Like was someone else said, they are high end "For a Reciever". I personally am trying to decide between a Marantz or a Yamaha to replace my Onkyo. I think I might go with the Marantz, there is a local shop that has carried them for about 10 years now and I feel they will at least give me good service, that and they have a great reputation. I have heard them playing with a complete Energy speakers setup and it sounds quite good.

When my Onkyo works, it is great, but when it doesn't it is a complete nightmare. They simply refused to do anything about the problems with my unit and the customer service was a joke. Of course mine is a different animal being a Reciever & DVD changer combo unit, but it was a design flaw with the unit and Onkyo simply decided to write it off and not do anything about it. I know a lot of people here have the new Onkyo recievers, but I personally will never buy another one.
