Default Silent Hill - Japanese Blu-ray edition

I just watched the Japanese Blu-ray edition of Silent Hill. The PQ in this one is awesome, three-dimensional, incredibly rich in detail - one of the best if not the best I have ever seen at home. The uncrompressed PCM 5.1 sound makes the experience perfect, it enhances the dark threatening atmosphere, while watching I thought I was there, too.

I did not notice any of the shortcomings Peter Bracke complained about in his review of the American edition. There are absolutely no inconsistencies in the picture. It is completely stable throughout the film and even the most critical dark dimly-lit scenes - and the film has plenty of them - are perfectly rendered, there is nothing that distracts from the movie experience.

The Japanese is a BD-50 and contains also the one hour long Making of documentary in high definition.

The downside is that it was released only as a part of the pricy 4-disc "Ultimate Box" containing 3 DVDs and the Blu-ray disc. Two of the three DVDs have exactly the same content as the BD (feature film plus Making of), the third DVD contains a special on the Konami game, including a comparison between the game and the movie.

I bought it at hmv.co.jp for 7,300 yen. It is also available at cdjapan.co.jp (8,800 yen).

I think a lot of the bad reviews the US edition received were based on improper equipment setup, if not reviewer bias. Saying anything good about BD or anything bad about HD DVD still isn't the popular thing to do on some forums.

I just bought this as I am in Tokyo now. Are you sure the "Making of documentary" is HD? It states that the documentary is in SD, as shown in the attached jpg.

Anyway, I will enjoy watching this movie when I go back home

Thanks. A little too pricey for me . The Blu-Ray sounds good though!

Sure I am not *BLUSH* but it did look pretty damn good. Could be that I thought it was HD since it is automatically upscaled if it's not. Normally, however, I do notice the difference which is pretty obvious despite the SD content being upscaled, e.g. in The Searchers.

I paid altogether 8,452 yen including shipping via EMS (took only 3 days to Vienna!). I had to pay 20.07 euro import duties.
