Long story short, I have been shopping around new subs (sunfire EQ is being auditioned next week, thanks to the help of others here) But I can't afford a new one quite yet, But in the meantime, my sub has a very apparent "HUM" from the amp, even when it's not connected to my receiver..... I took it appart, checked connections, looked for melted/crossed wires, and it all looks good. Since it does it when it's not connected, I know it's the amp in it that is going bad. I plugged it into it's own dedicated monster-power-source, and it still does it, so it's not EMI interference, and it's 2 prong, so it's not a ground issue.
Anyone know if there is a way to save it, or if it will continue to work, or is it done for?????? I know I'm planning on upgrading, but I'd really like to keep this one working for my Rec-room, and I don't want to have to purchase its replacement this soon, because my wife is still salty about the $9k I've spent on speakers in the past 3 months, and honestly I don't want to tell her I'm getting a new sub before father's day (that was our arrangement!) If anyone knows of anything that might be causing this, please help! It's a CV Sub-Model 150 (piece of junk I know) I've had it for 10 years, so nothing would surprise me. When listening to something, I can't hear it, but when the T.V. and Stereo are off, I hear it quite clearly (as if there was a refridgerator running just on the other side of the wall) |

Will it continue to work though? if it just dies, that's fine, I'll throw it out, but I don't want to even lug the thing to a shop, like I said..... it's pretty old! |

you'll love this answer... It depends..
IF the Cap is on the main power supply, when it goes, life will get interesting, and there is a slight fire hazzard....over voltage to the regulator which will probably handle it and just shut down, but.... If I had to guess, I would leave it, unless my family ran away for a week-end holiday g |

And a very good position to take with your wife on getting a new sub.
"Sweetie? What would you rather have? Lustrious full bottom sound, or for the house to burn down?" Let her decide. It puts the ball in her court. She still has the illusion of power and decision making in the household and you get what you wanted all along! ![]() |

O.K..... I couldn't stand the "buzz" any longer. I ordered a Def-Tech 14" Reference sub from a local shop, and they're giving me 30 days in-home to decide if I want to keep it, or just credit it towards another one (I've auditioned a couple now, so I'm sure I can find something) I haven't listened to this sub in my setup yet, so I'm hoping for the best.

I also have a hum in my sub,and like the op it evens hums when its not pluged into the receiver. so this is not a ground? i thought is was. and my receiver hums to, they both hum at the same time and stop at the same time. could this be a bad wall socet?. cause if i pluge them both into another outlet in my house ether the hum is gone or its so low you have to put your ear on it to hear it. i think if they were both bad they would have the same loud hum in any socet. any advice?. they even hum at the same time when i pluge one in a differnt outlet.

I got this at AMAZON.COM for only
$189 JBL Sub 12 500Watt(peak) and never looked back. ![]() ![]() The exact sub is anywhere from $300-500 at Circuit City or Best Buy. This is a middle end sub for like the bedroom or small living room. If you want something more serious get an Aperion Intimus S-10 ![]() Also, AVOID Mini Vee's at all costs! |

I love my HSU-Research sub and it is used with my Klipsch reference system. Truly incredible sub. Makes Elenore sound like She is in the room with me. Very tunable for room acoustics.
I have always found that amplifiers will hum if not properly grounded. I also do not ground to water pipes to avoid lightening from tree strikes coming back through the ground wire. I have a 9ft copper grounding rod that only hooks up to the electronic devices in my house. ![]() |

I upgraded from a Klipsch to an SVS about a month ago, best thing I ever did. Check the thread "calling all SVS owners" and you can see my comparison.
