Default Aspect ratio for Sharp Blu-ray

Is it possible to stretch dvd movies that are 1.66 - 1.85 aspect ratio to fit your widescreen tv (46")? I have a Sharp Aquos and have movies that are blacked out on the left and right side. I have tried changing my blu-ray setting to 16:9 instead of 4:3, no change.

If you have a widescreen TV then your player should always be on widescreen (16:9) mode.

If you are watching a 1.66:1 movie, your screen should be full top to bottom, with small bars on the left and right (you might not see them, I do on my set, but they are SMALL). If the movie is 1.85:1, you should be full left to right with very small bars on the top and bottom.

If you are seeing a wide screen image with black bars on the top, bottom, left, and right, the video you are watching is not widescreen video -- it is letter boxed 1.33:1 video (in other words, the DVD is a 4:3 video, and the black bars are a part of the image- the DVD player doesn't know any better... it just knows theres a 4:3 picture on there) Check the DVD to see if it says anywhere that it is "Enhanced for Widescreen TV's" or "Anamorphic Widescreen" - in an anamorphic DVD, the image is 16:9, and the DVD player has the ability to squeeze the picture and add in black bars on the top and bottom to make it look right on a 4:3 Television.
