Probably a static buildup from rubbing the carpet/floor which is setting off the standby button when you get close. You can do the same with your finger before actually touching the button if there's static built up on you.

A similar thing happened to Eddie in "Christmas Vacation":
"Every time Catherine would turn on the microwave, I'd piss my pants and forget who I was for about half an hour." ![]() |

Is your PS3 directly on the carpet? If YES that's a Very Bad Thing (because of static). If not, then never mind.
PSA Announcement: But for those of you who have your PS3 or computer sitting directly on carpet, you can cause problems to the hard drive (and other components) by repeated static buildup/shocks. Get a piece of wood (or thick carboard, if nothing else) between the computer and the carpet. You shouldn't leave any electronics on carpet (static BAD, carpet fuzz BAD), but computers are extry sensitive creatures. Last edited by bluperch; 02-22-2008 at 03:12 PM. |

This might sound silly, but... I've seen it happen.
If there is a loose solder (or two) in a machine, small vibrations can cause it to break contact and then re-contact, with unexpected results. I had a friend whose office was above his garage and anytime someone opened the garage door, his PC would reset. He thought it was an electrical issue. Turns out the reset switch wire was loose and the vibration caused by the garage door was the culprit. Try standing near the PS3 and jumping up and down, or stomping the floor. If it repeats, this might be your problem. |

Haha that's funny .. PlayBeyond. Static is the most likely reason for sure.
