Hey! I got a PS3 about 7months ago and since then ive been building a little blu-ray collection. Altho i dont buy all my movies in blu-ray because of the fact its not 100% sure that blu-ray is a stay here thing. Plus the fact their not as portable as dvd's "like if you wanna take a movie to someones house, seeing not many people have blu-ray players" still i do enjoy the better look. So when is it really best to buy a movie in blu-ray rather then dvd?

Howdie!
I'm brand new to Blu-Ray too, and I've been asking myself the same question. I've got a large DVD collection and I'm not going to buy every movie I have on Blu-Ray. Here's kind of the criteria I'm going to be using... 1. Do I own it on DVD? If not, then going forward I'd rather buy on Blu-Ray than DVD since I made the investment in the player. And Amazon runs good deals to where you can get them at prices similar to DVD. 2. If I DO own it on DVD, Is it a movie that's going to be worth owning on Blu-Ray too??? Is it a movie that has special effects and/or high enough quality to warrent the purchase? Simply put, will it make people stop and say "WOW" ??? The reviews on this site are pretty helpful for that. For instance... I normally wouldn't buy movies like CARS or I-Robot, but they've gotten RAVE reviews on Blu-Ray, so I'll probably have to get them both! If it's Sci-Fi or from PIXAR it's typically a safe bet! lol. And hey, I want to see THE BEST Blu-Ray has to offer! 3. Is it a movie I love and/or will watch over and over???... These for me include Fifth Element, Batman (when it comes out), Sunshine, LoTR, Star Wars, etc (whenever they all come out.) Some movies I'll watch over and over again... and I might as well be watching it on the best quality. For instance. Christmas Vacation. I watch that movie MANY times each year. Does it look AMAZING in Blu-ray? According to the review it's the best it's ever looked, but it's not going to stop anyone in thier tracks. Still... I made the investment in a Blu-Ray player, so if it's a movie I'll watch over and over, then I'll cough up the dough. Hope this helps! Last edited by 209Mason; 03-14-2008 at 02:49 AM. |

I've purchased maybe 2 DVD's in the last year and a half (and that was over a year ago), and that was only because they weren't available on Blu-ray. All of my friends are high def junkies too, so they all have blu-ray players. At least the one's I'd loan movies to or bring movies over to.
I've been steadily replacing my DVD collection when a new Blu-ray equivalent comes out as well. I think it all just depends on how comfortable/confident you are with Blu-ray. I have no doubt that it is going to be successful, though to what degree no one knows. At any rate, I can't stomach watching standard DVD very well now that I'm spoiled to Blu, and I just cant purchase DVD any more knowing it's obsolete when compared to Blu-ray movies. |

So the answer to "when is it really best?" is "from now on". You can always rent a DVD to take to someone's house in the meantime. I wouldn't be "investing" in buying DVDs right now. They are on the way out. |

I stopped buying anything when the format war started, so I went without for two years. Two weeks after Warner's announcement I bought myself a DMP-BD30K at Costco, and the rest is history.

If you want portability, you SHOULD NOT buy Blu-ray at all. It will be years before blu-ray players are at everyone's home.
If you care more about superior picture/sound quality, the time is now and forever.. Decision is ultimately yours. |

Here's how I looked at it. Go by studio!
If it's a Disney (Pixtar) product, it's a no brainer. The video & audio quality will blow any dvd out of the water. Buying a dvd instead is like throwing money on the street. All Sony's BD's look & sound better than their dvd counterparts + they have some form of lossless audio tracks. (MP's Life of Brian pq is so much better than even the Criterion version & is less than half the price) Fox I start to waiver. They tend to be very expensive & have DTS-HD (I own a ps3 so I don't get to hear the full LOSSLESS audio). Lionsgate - newer movies have 7.1 lossless audio & picture quality is great. Their older one's IMO are just somewhat better than their dvd counterparts (slightly better picture but same audio as their dvd counterparts). IMO their older transfers can (& probably later on) use some work. New Line - in between Fox (but a little bit more affordable) & Warner with DTS-HD. Warner (so far) - IMO their picture quality is allways better than their dvd version but not as good as the other studios (Except for Blade Runner - I hear that's awesome) & at times won't use lossless audio. Paramount (so far) don't use lossless audio codecs but their picture quality is better than thier dvd's. I originally went into blu-ray with the idea of only spending the extra cash on a select few movies. The more I watched, the less I can accept dvd quality. Since I started with Blu-Ray in Oct 07 I have puchased 62 movies, only 1 has been a regular dvd (Simpson's Movie - I like it but I will not spend $40.00 CDN on it). After seeing Termanator 2, Total Recal & A Christmas Vacation I recomend to my FRIENDS that unless they got to have it - wait for a remastered version. That's my expeirence with it, hope it helps you. Last edited by LMonaco; 03-14-2008 at 05:15 AM. |

(1) HD TV (the newer the better) (2) Receiver (ie. Onkyo 605) (3) GOOD speakers a lot of people skip on (1) and (2), never hear the audio power of blu, which IMO is 60% of the experience....if you have (1),(2),(3), you will buy all your DVDS on blu...i know..I have ![]() |
