PS3's in short supply?

Has anyone noticed that PS3's are sold out in their area? When I got mine two weeks ago I had to goto 3 different stores to find a new 80gb. We called 3 Targets and they were all sold out and two of the 3 Gamestops we went to only had used ones. The only GS that had a new one was the one that just opened near me.

Is this happening near anyone else? Sounds like alot of people in my area are getting into Blu-ray.

There's plenty of 40GB units in my area but the 80GB units sell like hotcakes. Same thing goes for Nintendo Wii systems.

The Sony Style store thats about 10 miles away from me has 40 80gb units in stock. It is the Core model (upgraded 40GB).

I work at Best Buy, we get them regularly, but they are selling as fast as we get them, so we will be out of stock 2-3 days at a time.

It seems like all the consoles will be in short supply this holiday season. Glad I got my PS3 before things really get crazy. Now all I need is to upgrade my tv...

I see a trend here. The stores where adults mostly shop like Best Buy, the PS3 is sold out while the places where kids or people that shop for their kids like Target, Frys they have plenty. Could it be that people walk into Best Buy want a blu ray player walk out with a PS3?

Not sold out, but say if they are stocked full and I go back to the store a couple of days later, they usually only have a couple left on the shelf. A $299 Backward Compatible PS3 would be in Wii like shortage right now.

Has there been any change in policy at Best Buy? For a while, my local Best Buy seemed to be selling them pretty quickly but the last time I was there (this past weekend), I didn't even see a place for them. Just checking their website, under store pickup it says not available. So, what's up with that?

Edit: Hmm, all the Circuit City stores in my area are showing out of stock.

I have a feeling Sony is taking a play out of Nintendo's retail strategy playbook. If you create the impression of artificial scarcity more units will be sold overall.

There's usually a lot of 40GB units because,obviously, nobody wants them. I still want the 80GB MGS edition though.

My distributor said they can't get the 40GB anymore (this was a couple weeks ago). I asked for a PS3 80 gig and they were out of that as well. In their next shipment they are sending me an 80 gig.

For some reason Sony is selling the current supply down. I know they are removing the 40 gig sku so that makes sense but I'm crossing my fingers that they plan to do another sku that is cheaper than $399. Lord knows they need a price cut of at least $50-$100.
