Default PS3 supply shortage?

I visit Best Buy about once a week, and for two weeks running I've noticed that the two stores in my area have zero 120 gigs. They have a decent number of the 250s, but I doubt those sell as well. Other stores have re-stocked, so I can't tell if its a good thing or a bad thing. Have you guys noticed the same where you live or is it just my area? Also, the other consoles, especially Xbox, are in large supply.

It's possible that sony will discontinue the 120 gig.

Now that you mention it, I have only seen the 250GB at the Best Buy stores I go to.

Looks like its sold out everywhere online as well. I seriously doubt they are discontinuing the model soon because that sort of news generally spreads across the web weeks beforehand. Plus, other stores like wal-mart had 120s this week and they were sold out last week.

This is a very logical explanation given the trends we've seen this generation

I've seen lots of the 250gb w/ free extra controller. Not a lot of 120 gigs. Possibly might grab one of those so I can put a little less wear and tear on my launch 60 gig PS3.

Also, tons of 360s.

Uhh no sorry.

Jack tretton said the PS3 might have shortages this christmas. he said this in september.

EDIT- here you go

"If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages."

I'm just wondering if these shortages are an indicator of good or bad sales figures to come. Sony might simply not have enough systems to keep up.

Conspiracy theory! Sony doesn't want to sell a $299 PS3. They can site and focus on the $399 production and either get you to not buy, or buy the more expensive unit.

That would be the dumbest move they could pull. Hellooooo Xbox!!

Sony is more competitive than that. I would be very very disappointed if that were to happen...

Wow, mayhem and foolishness!

1) Christmas Eve is in exactly one week, of course the lowest priced model of the best gaming console is in low supply.

2) In the nearly 4 months since SCE debuted the 120gb PS3 Slim for $299, they've had very solid sales and turned up the competition against the other consoles. They would NOT discontinue their $299 model UNLESS they lowered the the price of a moer expensive model (the 250gb Slim) to replace that...but...it's way to early for them to do that, IMO.

3) While it would be ridiculous to discontinue the 120gb Slim so soon, it's entirely possible that Sony made a conscious decision to let 120gb supply run out to tempt desperate, late shoppers to pay $100 more for the $250gb Slim. Even if that's the case, they will keep making some 120gb models for $299 just so they can say they have a $299 model.

when i went to buy my slim 2-3 weeks agi i went to 5 different stores looking for a 120gb (3 walmarts, 1 sams club & 1 best buy)

none had the 120gb except the last walmart i went to......and i was ending my trip there and going to get 'whetever they had in stock'

low and behold this final walmart had the 120gb AND it was the black friday bundle with infamous & batman games and the dark knight bluray for $299

i gave batman to my friend for free, sold infamous for $26 and traded the dark knight (already have it) for a bottle of kettle one vodka!

last wk my local best buy had about 10 120gb ps3 - i went back the very next day to finally grab one and they were gone. Just seems to be the hot thing this year I guess. I would keep checking back if you haven't already found one cause I was there again the other day and there was 1 left they said they found in the back.

Damn - sounds like I got the shaft - I went to Walmart the tues/weds after Black Friday and they just received 3 of that same bundle which I thought was great til I got to the register and they wanted to charge me $399 for it. I walked away cause I thought I would get the $299 price still but it wasnt worth an extra $100 to me

I was at the best buy in Potomac Yards and they had stacks & stacks of both the 120 & 250's setting out. They had even more in the back. So, there is no shortage near me. They also had a ton at the Landmark store.
