Default Why not build a standalone-type PS3 for audio racks?

I wonder which would sell more? Here is a photo of the PS3 developers kit which game companies use to make games. If the PS3 was also available in an audio-enthusiast-friendly design, do you think it would sell?

No, Because the market for it is very small. Sony Computer Entertainment has very little interest in selling people a subsidized game system who aren't going to be buying games for it.

Sony proper wants to sell you a dedicated deck.

the only thing it really needs to make it perfect would be bitstreaming of the hd codecs and a 7.1 analog breakout cable. maybe a small screen on the front for sacd-cd playback no need for a whole new outer shell. i think the round top of the player was done so that you couldn't stack things on the ps3 and have it over heat

Agreed. If you have the money and that kind of interest, you could just engineer a rack model yourself. Given the DIY capabilities of the Average Joe these days (people building coffee machines into their PC's and such), I can't imagine it would be very difficult to do--just ambitious.
