Just curious.. I have the onkyo 805.. and a ps3.
But damnit Im tired of my hd dud player having better audio codecs.. I have the HD-A35 model. Im tired of waiting for the possible updates to improve the audio codecs of the ps3. So heres the question.. Should I get a standalone player when the 2.0 players come out? Should I stay with the ps3 and just hope that updates come soon? |

I too have been waiting over a year for the Dts-HD MA update...but im satisfied with the dts core with hopes of an update eventually...so I understand your grief. But since its been rumored to happen for over a year Ive slipped into the "I'll believe it when I see it" category. So when will it happen?? who the heck knows. So, if Dts-HD MA is important I say why wait? The new Panasonic BD50 looks like a sweet player. ![]() |

I don't know, I really like my PS3. I don't have the most advanced system, but it looks and sounds perfect on what I got. That's the most important thing for me. Plus, you get everything else, the games, the downloadable stuff, wi-fi (so you don't have to burn a disk for the updates) I know a lot of other players are coming out with the wi-fi feature or they have an ethernet port. A PS3's worth it.

That's an interesting way of putting it considering there's what, like, 1 US HD DVD title (Pan's Labyrinth) using DTS-HD MA? Not to mention there are a lot more blu-ray titles using lossless audio (that you can decode just fine or don't have to decode at all). But yeah, I can see where having the capability on HD DVD, even if it isn't used, can be somewhat comforting.

I bought the Samsung BD 1400P for $299 in November and got 8 free Blu-ray movies. Not bad at all

Almost every movie in BR offers LPCM...and your not going to get any better then that...I don't think you really need to buy a stand alone player but if that floats your boat then ya...I was thinking about do that just so I didn't have to use my PS3 as a BD player and game player...

It just pisses me off to no extent that my stupid ass 199.99 HD-A35 player uses better audio codecs then my damn 600 dollar PS3 60gb. Im a huge audiophile since I have the onkyo805.. and i just want to enjoy movies. Granted.. the movies sound phenomenal with my setup now.. But I wanna know how much better they will sound with a standalone player that does DTS HD and all the others that PS3 does not ![]() |

I really don't understand the mechanics involved in how audio decoding works, but would a firmware update allow the PS3 to bitstream DTS-HD MA?

I’m thinking of getting a stand-alone player AND a PS3. I want best possible playback of all media, and good as the PS3 is, I get the impression its not the master of all of them. In particular, I think CDs can sound better than when using toslink from a PS3, so I’m thinking of getting a universal player for CDs and region 2 DVDs, plus a PS3 for games and blu-rays.
Not sure whether anyone has taken this approach, but I’m keen to use an i-link connection for non-BD audio, as it seems to be better than spdif, toslink or HMDI. Unfortunately there are no BD players that can do this, and I’m not sure there ever will be. Nick |
