Default What was the first pair of speakers you ever owned?

What was the first pair of speakers you ever owned.. doesnt matter brand or price... what was it about your first pair that got you into the hobby? what did you like or dislike about them
I Remember in the late 70s seeing the radio shack catalogs. Back then they used to make some decent stuff. anyways I saw a pair of the first generation Mach 1's they looked cool. then i happened to go to the mall and the local shack had a pair on display.. they looked ominous and threatening and I knew I just had to have them. I saved and saved up for them took me almost a year to save up the money for a pair.

I wasnt working much at 16 and that was big money to me. I finally had enough money to buy a pair and low and behold radio shack put them on sale at half price... I bought a pair and put the rest of the money towards saving for an amp. those things could honk back in the day. They dont hold a candle to what i have now but back then i think i apreciated the hobby more.

there was 2 versions of Mach1 speakers.. the first version was the best the second was known for rotting woofer surrounds. then came the mach2 later. I ended up getting a pair of mach2s but they werent quite as good. I was the envy of all my friends with that setup. we set them up in the garage and man we had some loud parties back in the day.

so lets hear your first speaker purchase stories?

13 yrs old - my uncle found a pair of AR-3s at a church flea market
WHat did I like? The bassy punch that they delivered.
What did I dislike? 4ohm keept blowing my humble sherwood amp and that they weighed a ton...made it very difficult to move them

Regrets? leaving them behind for my little sister to use...I think she destroyed them

Cost - $30

My first pair of speakers were high-end Koss CM1030 speakers. I spent all my savings on them and enjoyed them for many years. They were amazing. I finally gave them to a friend after I upgraded my speakers.

KOSS CM-1030 speakers
Years Manufactured: 1977 - 1983
MSRP: $900.00

The CM1030 was vented and had a 10" woofer, two 4.5" mids and two 1" dome tweeters (one handling lower and one handling upper treble).

The CM1020 was vented and had a 10" woofer, one 4.5" mid and one 1" dome tweeter.

The CM1010 (very few sold) had an 8" woofer, a 10" passive radiator and a 1" dome tweeter.

These were reviewed in 1978 and 1979 in Stereo Reveiw and High Fidelity.

The CM line was designed with the help of Dr. Robert Ashley after Small and Theile (Australia) brought their computer optimized bass box system alignment theory to U.S.

One word says it all: Sanyo.

A perfect complement to the one piece receiver/phonograph/8 track player.

I sure thought Immigrant Song sounded great on them.

Sony Surround speakers (I'm using them now) but later I want to upgrade to Paradigm Studio 100's or PSB's.

My first pair of speakers were Klipsch LaScala's. Huge speakers with Horns. Very efficient and the sound pressure level was astounding. At that time I had McIntosh tube Pre-Amp and 2 ch. amp. and a Thorens Turntable. It was actually the best sound I've ever heard. Brings back alot of memories. [Jim]

My older brother (older by 20 years mind you.... he turns 50 right before I turn 30 this year!) gave me some Henry Kloss (I think that's what they were) Signature series Cambridge Soundworks..... they were great, and I was an idiot for getting rid of them.

My first ever speakers were for a guitar at 16 (some crappy practice amp, then Peavey 212 scorpions..so many amps ago!). For theater, Onkyo HTiB setup. I'm still using 4.1 of the speakers as my surrounds, rear surrounds and sub. Now using some Klipsch Reference fronts and center until I have the cash to replace the rest.

The first speakers i bought:

Jamo studio 180.

I felt so proud, to have these relative big speakers....i was 15 years old, now i'am 21, and i'm considering the Klipsch rf 52......instead of my JBl e10 bookshelfs/surround speakers.

Thumbs up Tannoy Mercurys

My first real speakers (discounting noname junk speakers I got from my dad) were a pair of Tannoy Mercury Mk 2s. Very nice speakers, considering my meager budget of about £150 for speakers and stands (alas, the Tannoy Venus were out of my price range).

On reading about bi-wiring in the hifi rags, I modified their crossovers to make them bi-wirable. It made a big difference (especially considering how cheap the mod was), and I've been an advocate of bi-wiring ever since.

I find the crossovers provided to be of good enough quality, that I never noticed a difference when bi-wiring..... but that feeds into the everlasting debate of whether or not to bi-wire or not.

A used pair of Harvard's. I had never heard of them and my friends made fun of 'em. 10" woofer, mid & tweeter. They weren't as loud as theirs, but I'm sure they were sonically better. Back then it was all about LOUD for us kids though.

Ran them off of a Harman Kardon HK 350i receiver. Best receiver I ever had!

lol. A $150 HTiB from Costco, the Philips HTS3450...were it not for that, I would never have gotten into A/V electronics and as a result, Blu-Ray in general...

I had a bunch of DIY and hand-me-down speakers when I was growing up, the very first speakers I bought that I consider decent are the B&W DM602s.

The first speakers I bought were a pair of Studiocraft speakers I bought in Burlington Vt. They had 6.5 inch wofors and 1 inch dome tweeters. My first speakers I learned to listen to were Bozak Concert Grands. They were the speakers in My fathers church auditorium. Very big, but they could reproduce Virgil Fox perfectly on the pipe organ.
