for everyone out there who streams audio to their ps3 from their computer how do you like the audio quality? I have a 500 gb external usb drive connected to my computer that I use to stream my music collection to the PS3. I use WMP 11 and all the files are ripped as wav files. My thinking was that id get near cd quality sound saving them that way. Its a convenient way to have my music collection played however I notice that the music just sounds lifeless. the ps3 is sending audio to the preamp via HDMI and run the Integra in direct mode. if i switch to say all channel stereo its even worse. whats funny is I canplay an MP3 cd burned at 192 in my dvd player and it sounds a whole heck of a lot better than the PS3. is it because the DAC in the sony just isnt that good or am i missing something?
I also notice cds sound much better played through my oppo than the PS3 |

I haven't noticed a problem with audio quality in the media server function of PS3. But I use FLAC instead of WAV and use TVersity instead of WMP 11.
Also maybe my ears are shot, cause I used to listen to a lot of music full blast on my cd player with headphones ![]() |

Do you have surround sound on?
My music sounds beautiful course I rip the discs on the ps3, if I want to listen to midis I have to burn them to a audio cd then rip them but alus so is life... I usually just copy the files over instead of trying to stream.. don't quite trust the stream. |

no its running 2 channel direct mode. ive just realized you lose too much in the translation streaming stuff.. convienent yes sound quality? no!
I had a friend over listening to the stream he made the same comment that it sounded lifeless compared to a cd. (then again once you listen to an Elton john sacd in direct DSD mode then go to streaming a media server it just doesnt cut it) I think ill just rip some MP3 DVDs at 320 and see how that goes. im also gonna try to hook the ext drive directly to the playstation and see if theres a diff in audio quality. boosting the volume to +1 or 2 causes audible distortion. |

And I think FLAC also produces smaller file sizes than WAV although I am not absolutely sure on this. |

just a guess, but could it be that thru the cd player its connected rca? and ps3 whether you have it optical or hdmi is sent straight digital connection? I've been streaming music but have my ps3 hardwired at gigabit speed so stream is pretty strong.

not sure if this is supposed to be this way but when i push the display button on my integra but its reading the signal from the PS3 as MCH 48khz 5.1 PCM audio.. shouldnt it be reading it as 2 channel?

Using UPNP yes. I know I share a couple folders from my iMac to my PS3 using NullRiver Medialink and it works awesome. I watch some podcasts that way... and also thru iTunes. |
