Default DVE: HD BASICS (Blu-ray) @Frys?

Has anyone gone to Frys to see if they have the DVE BD yet? I don't want to drive out there if they don't have it.

They should. It's front and center on the ad, and the discs were shipped weeks ago, so if they haven't arrived, that's something wrong with Fry's distro

Buy.com has it for $16.99 with free shipping. And you can get an extra $10 off if you use Google Checkout for the first time.

I just bought it off Amazon for $18 with free shipping. It's on the way...

I also finally picked up a sound level meter and laser pointer from Radio Shack. I'm all ready to make the final tweaks to my home theater room.

Just got back from Frys and they did not have it. I had them look it up and they said none of their stores have it and none on order.

Do you happen to own a telephone? If so, you might have better luck than posting on the blu-ray.com forum and asking people to speculate on what you'll find when you get there.

Bob,

Be nice to the fella,.. He hunted DVE and failed... It's sad.

But,.. Hey,.. At least you got to go to Frys. I wish I could do that. I used to live within walking distance of the Palo Alto Fry's.. I love that place.

Thanks for the comment buddy, that was very helpful! I'll look into that telephone thing you speak of when I get a chance.

Just read on engadget that apparently (feel free to correct if untrue) they botched the BR version compared to the HD DVD one (slow menus, No True HD track, no bookmarking).

I'm going to wait for them to release a "true" BR edition then.

I can report the menus move just fine on my BD10A

I've asked about the THD and bookmarking

Have they improved the UI over the earlier DVD releases? It was a poster-child for a non-intuitive experience.

THD is on there (I haven't had a chance to really go through the whole disc myself. I calibrated and saved the bonus stuff for later)), but it's 5.1, not 6.1

The UI is greatly improved

So .. their "excuse" that TrueHD isn't a mandatory spec for Blu Ray is even worse than I thought. They did put it in, but just a Botched 5.1 vs a 6.1 for HD DVD (and why not a 7.1 ?? O.o) ...

In in the name of all that is good and holy .. Wth ???

And actually, here is what Ultimate AV Mag had to say about the matter, with feedback from Kane:

Quote:
The problems with the Blu-ray version are not the fault of Kane's production but of the format itself. The Blu-ray spec identifies many features—such as bookmarking and Dolby TrueHD—as optional, making it difficult to author a robust disc for all players. The only thing that is not optional is copy protection, which costs producers thousands of dollars each time they author a disc, even so-called "check discs" to make sure everything operates as expected on the wide variety of Blu-ray players. Now that Blu-ray has won the format war, I encourage all parties involved to remove the word "optional" from player specifications and add the same word to copy protection. This is exactly how HD DVD structured things, and it's clearly the right way to go.
I don't know, but it sounds like a lot of BS to me, specially the TrueHD track thing.
Also shows that the reviewer for UAV Mag is using this article as a mini tribune to tout HD DVD's suposed "superiority".

F... DVE, is what I say to that.

I shamefully admit to have the following places in my contact list of my cellphone.

Frys (arlington)
Best Buy (arlington)
Circuit City (arlington)
Target (arlington)
Walmart (arlington)

Now some may ask me WHY! CHRIS! WHY!

Simple reason lets say im at work, and someone says on the forum that
xyz game is out... as soon as work is over I start calling the places to
determine if I need to visit one of them when I get home.

Or say I go out with some friends and were eating at a sonic, and someone
says i wonder if game zys is out, I just start dialing found out how many they have and where, one of those nights turned into a visit to best buy to get UT3, as it was being removed from the trucks...

I know I know that sounds crazy but in my area when new games come out they do not stay on shelfs for very long.

When warhawk came out, many stores told me it would be a 4 month wait before they would have another copy, I found one place that had it, Target and sent someone to get it, I was at work of course.

See how that all works out... perfect right.

If calibration is about 10-15% of your TV's cost, why would you not pay for it? From what I understand, you can't even properly do the color and tint because the blue film has to be set to your TV's operating temperature, which can't be done outside of a light sensor and professional equipment. For the rest, I have to believe after checking it out that the calibration tools on Sony BR discs has to be good enough.

How is the audio on the disc? I guess that would be the only thing I don't have experience with. I have an apartment and I move once every year or two due to the nature of my job and such, so I have never invested in a home audio system.
