Upconverted DVD - Blu-ray Forum

Just how much better will an updonverted DVD look? I've seen a lot of people say that BD players upconvert DVDs to 1080p. But that can't mean that it plays are your DVDs as full HD, right?

NO PLAYER can upconvert a standard DVD to 1080P

That being said......

Some people don't like the upconverted look..... I think a lot of movies (Lucas movies especially) look FANTASTIC upconverted.....

Blu Ray always looks better though....... I'm keeping all of my DVDs (about 1,100 ) but some I buy on Blu (like The Shining and 2001, or A Clockwork Orange, or Full Metal Jacket, or Last Waltz, or The Rock, or Blade Runner etc) and others I'll just watch the DVD upconverted..... Like television series etc. I already have every episode of Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD..... I'm sure they'll look better on Blu (Esp. Sopranos) but for the cost vs. enjoyability factor, there is other stuff I'd like to spend my hard earned cash on.....

bottom line... some DVDs up-convert better than others, but NO 1080P don't believe their lies.............

Ok, I'll be the "me too" guy and echo the above sentiment.

I believe upconversion makes SOME difference, but even the worst blu-ray looks better in comparison.

Upconversion is just a fancy way of saying that the player does a good-quality blow-up from 480i to 1080p.

It can't give you picture detail that isn't in the 480i source so it can never compare to 1080p (or even 720p/1080i).

Upconversion simply expands what is there, if you have a bad DVD it will certainly look worse when upconverted; however, a good dvd will show its best qualities if the machine that does the upconversion is a good one. I find the PS-3 does very well, but again, if the DVD is not a good quality one to begin with, it will tend to look even worse in my experience.
